Re: Maybe a stretched E-brake line?

Great thoughts. I think the squeeking is probably the rear shock mount. The rattling may be something different like the ebrake line. I'll try that.

The car still handles as awesome as it always has. I really love this car. :)

It could be your e-brake shoes gone bad. The surface material can separate from the metal backing causing sounds as you describe.

    Maybe a stretched E-brake line?

My 2.8 coupe (113K) will rattle in the rear for two reasons these days. the e-brake and one of my sway bar mounts.

I'm pretty sure my e-brake line is stretched because one notch up on lever solves that rattle.

The sway bar attachment popped off one day at the auto-X, reattached it but its anyways rattled on bumps since then.

I also on occasion here one of my rear shock mounts rattle too, needs replacing.

I've had my sub floor checked multiple times, still solid. Look for tears and cracks around the Diff.

Has the cars handling changed at all?

It's probably either a rear shock mount, or the dreaded trunk floor separation problem.

The first problem is an easy fix, and really should be done at those miles if it's never been done anyway, but you have to disassemble the interior in the rear just to get to them. The rear shock mounts are the bushings at the top of the shocks where they mount to the body. If your shocks are original they are completely shot at this point anyway.

The trunk floor separation problem (often called "the subframe problem" even though it has little to do with your subframe) is a not-terribly-uncommon problem that can become fairly severe. If you look under your car, you'll see that the differential and the rear sway bar both mount to a tranverse metal brace under the trunk floor. Usually what happens is that the small metal ears where the diff mounts start to tear. When it gets bad, that entire transverse brace starts to pull away from the trunk floor itself on the left hand side, and when it gets really bad, the floor sheet metal starts to pull away from the longitudinal frame rails, also on the left side.

I hope it's not that. The fixes are well-known but are pretty expensive.

    Z3 Coupe - RR suspension squeeking/rattling

I've got a '99 Z3 2.8 Coupe w/ around 80K miles on it. I've owned the car for about 2 years. About 6 months ago the right rear suspension area began emmitting a creaking/squeeking/rattling noise whenever I went over speadbumps, rough road, or if I sat down in the car when it was parked. This noise is very persistant and if the windows are down the noise is VERY audible. I can't figure out what's causing it. It isn't the spare tire holder. That's solid. Is it my suspension? Any thoughts?
