    I have to agree about keeping the mechanical FI. I bought a rebuilt pump on ebay for $700 just to have a spare. With a turbo tii I am not about to switch to carbs!! There are a few special non-exotic tools, but it's not that difficult to maintain. My car is 37 years old and has had a few screws turned on the injection system, but nothing major.

    I understand you can get KF pump rebuilt for $500-1,500. Cost to convert to Weber+fuel pump+fuel regulator+manifold+etc. may be higher, and you still have to tune that. As for tuning the KF, there are several tii gurus in the DC area, try the DC-area BMW Vintage Owners Association at http://nccbmwcca.org; there will be events soon where you can find other local owners. There are also couple of shops in the Rockville, MD area that could probably do it, probably also in NoVa.

    I live in Fredericksburg, VA and have several carbed 2002s.

    There was a chap in town with a nice 74 tii, but he simply could not find anyone to work on the mechanical injection on his car. The only BMW mechanic in town had to order a tii tool from Munich and learn "on the fly". I think the owner grew so disgusted, he sold the car after sinking a small fortune into the car - sad.

    Thus, you are not alone.

    I am putting a 2.0 litre 320i (77 model) engine into one of my 2002s and because it is injected, the cylinder head did not have the ports drilled for the mechanical pump. I am going to use the carb because I feel the way you do.

    I purchased a low pressure purolator electric fuel pump to replace the mechanical pumps traditionally used on 2002 carb models. Secret is to make sure you have fuel delivery to a carb, but with not too much fuel pressure. Injection systems generally require higher pressure. Your car may have a pump built into the gas tank - if so you may only need a "pressure regulator". This may be the only hurdle you will encounter. Of course you'll need the intake manifold and the carb - most likely a Weber. Just make sure you buy a new Weber. They have a life span and a used one may have worn guides for the throttle plates introducing air into mixture causing your tuning problems.

    Changing From Kugelfischer to Carb

    I have a 74tii. It has not run well for several years and is in need of an injection pump rebuild. Since these are expensive and I am not mechanically inclined, I am considering having it converted to a weber carb.

    I know this is wrong and upsetting to many of you, but I want to be able to drive my car and rely on it and do not have (and can't afford) a tii mechanic who can keep it tuned up for me.

    The car and I are in central VA and I am having trouble finding any info on this site's search on how to do this conversion--what is needed, what to look out for, etc.

    Any suggestions are much appreciated.Coltrane, MMII
