    UK E65

Re: How reliable are the 02 745i's?

My 2002 E65 (745) was bought late 2007 from A BMW dealer with full UK BMW used car warranty. It had only done 25K miles. It has cost BMW thousands in warranty repairs during the 18 months I've had it.I assume the selling dealer just hoped I wouldn't know or recognise many of the faults which were showing up.
90% of problems were electrical. ..the CD satnav failed and as many others have found, you need to persuade the dealer to fit a DVD replaecement to effect a permanent cure. Only other mechanical failure was boot(trunk) self open/close mechanism. Some of the eletrical problems were hard to track down but everything became stable with all the s/ware updates - they are all written about on the various BMW fora.
It is all now sorted and I have s superb, reliable car worth very little in p/e terms but to replace it with new would cost me 10x more.
Only thing I don't like is the Bangle shape !

    Re: WAIT...

Does the car come with all the CD's though? I don't travel out of state much so I don't see it as a big deal.

I went back to the ad and noticed that it says, "SPORT PACKAGE seats."

Have you had any trouble at all with your's?

I'm a little worried about those potential $5-10k repairs.

First off, I agree with the above post that the turn around in E65/66 reliability came March 2003. That said, most of the early issues were software related and have since been addressed with software updates. I would no longer shy away from a good deal on a 2002, although I would have at that time.

Secondly, check the car you are looking at carefully. Yes, all E65/66 come with Navigation standard. In 2002 and early 2003 it was CD based and upgraded to DVD in mid-2003. The advantage of the DVD is that the entire U.S. is on one disk. The CD only has a single region (e.g. Northeast, etc) on a disk.

**However, the Sport Package was introduced late February 2003, which was model year 2003. NO 2002 car can have Sport Package, becuase it did not exist yet. I am 100 percent positive of this because I waited for the sport package to get my first E65. It was the very first Sport that my dealer received. I took delivery in March 2003 and it was a 2/03 build date. So either the dealer is mistaken (unlikely) or being dishonest telling you it has a sport package. If it's a 2002, it does NOT have a sport package.

    So it wasn't 2002?

The redesign was 2002 right? So it didn't get better until the late 03's?

How do you know this? Just wondering.

I tried to search for common problems and I found something that said the problems were fixed with software updates.

But I also found something about transmission issues. Some needing new transmissions? Hear anything about that?

Re: How reliable are the 02 745i's?

The real turn around in reliability of the 745 came with start of the March build of 2003. There were more problems with the cars of earlier vintage. I wish you luck.

What warranty repairs have you had done?

When you say early build 2001's, do you mean the ones that are called the 2001 model year? Or are you referring to 2002 model year E65's that were built in 2001?

Was it your catalytic converters that failed? What kinds of repairs have you had done that were under warranty?

I found this post about a transmission issue.

The reason I'm interested in E65's is because I found a black 2002 745i (sport package and navigation - do they all come with navigation?) with 95k miles and a new transmission for $15,495.

I figure what's more expensive than a transmission? The engine should be fine right? And I figure, by 95k miles, most of the little stuff would've been worked out by then.

I don't want to get myself into something I can't handle. I do like working on cars. There are a few independent BMW shops in town.

According to MSN Autos, there aren't any issues with the 2002 E65's. Consumer reports doesn't have any data on the 2002 model year. 2001 looks horrible, but 2002 was the redesign year.

    thanks for your reply

Re: How reliable are the 02 745i's?

The early build (2001s) models were very troublesome at first but the kinks got worked out over the next few years. I have a late build (7/02) and it has been very reliable. Build date can be seen on the inside of the driver's door.

The problem now that they are all out of the 6yr/100K mile warranty is that the repairs are VERY expensive. There have been several posts on here of repairs in the $5-10K range for things that really are not all that major IMO. I've had one $1,600 repair since warranty ran out last year (something to do with emissions that was causing the car to hesitate).

When my warranty ran out last year, I decided to keep mine since it had been reliable so far and figured that most of depreciation was already done (car was worth $20K at the time). A newer one will depreciate $10-15K per year so if I can avoid the major repairs and it cost me $3-5K per year between depr and repairs, I will be doing very well to keep the car. So far, I'm right on track.

Of course if you can do some repairs yourself or have a cheaper option than the dealership, it will help big time.

    Hope this helps.

How reliable are the 02 745i's?

I checked consumer reports and they don't have any info on the 2002 model year. 2001 and back is horrible. Can anyone tell me if the 02 E65 is more reliable than the E39's?

For E39's I've read about water pump failures, radiator leaks, air pump failures, VANOS gasket failures, LCD readout failures, ignition coil failures, just to name a few.

I was wondering if the list for the E65 was a bit shorter.

    thanks in advance
