My out-of-the-blue thoughts... Well, I've got an S52 (no issues - hydraulic). But, with the S54's solid lifters... If the clearances are too wide, there can be noise - you know, clickety-clack, somewhat irregularly if they're not all even. Possibly somewhat reduced power at high rpms. Possibly higher wear on components. As for too tight clearances, I just rebuilt the head on my e30 and did the old eccentric-cam rocker adjustments. Symptoms there were a *very* irregular idle and *no* valve tapping noises. Valves were too tight from the machine shop (<.008"). Adjusted to .012 all around and idle is now butter smooth. hope this helps. i know it's a bit off-mark for you, given engine differences. PaulR 'CCA Memb #8743 '99 M-Coupe - Silver/Black '85 325e - my "Ol' Paint" '96 VFR750F - smoooth '86 Ducati 750-F1 - raw
