Re: this is what I'm thinkin too..... but

how could it spin so fast it randomly makes this "Whrrrrr" so loud that its all you hear. and then there's this sound asd if the fanblade is hitting something be it the shroud or what have you.

I haven't heard it in over a week now, even when I rev the engine intentionally trying to casue it.. it just don't happen when I am ready to jump for it.

I heard here way back when...that the waterpump and radiator and thermostat housing (gooseneck) as well as this pully should be replaced at 85,000 to 100,000 miles.

I've only changed the waterpump and thats due to some serious wobble in the shaft....(real obvious) and put in the one thats made of metal versus the original plastics that seem to be the issue and problem here.

Re: THANKS everyone its maybe tensioner but

I replaced the waterpump a couple of years back DUE TO SOME SERIOUS PLAY IN THE PULLY OUTPUT SHAFT.

and when I heard this whrrrrr the first thing I checked was to see if there was any wobble or play in that pully assembly (again) and there is none at all.

as for the fan hitting the shroud no .. I see nothing there as for it having contacted each other..there's no wear, no damage, just this random whrrrr sound, like the fan may be "freewheeling" separate from the motor's RPM.

it sure does sound like the fan and shroud are hitting each other. It only does this once in a while...maybe two or three times a weeknow. but I did notice this happen a couple times a full year ago and could'nt pin it down then, and then I just forgot about it thinking I'd give it some time and see what if anything seems to be getting worse...

could it be this idler pully ?

I doubt it engine mounts because I just don't put that much of a load on the motor ....ever.

this sometimes even does this whrrrrr, at idle, randomly, when I do a quick 2500-RPM rev.

its not frequent enough "yet" to have someone else rev the motor and be able to count on it making this noise, so I can find it.

Blades hitting something is not good!

IMMEDIATELY check your engne mounts and water pump pulley. One of those two things is worn out, allowing the fan to move into the shroud or into the radiator.

One of these days, it's going to move a lot, and it will break the fan, break the shroud, break the radiator, and possibly a lot more. Get it fixed before it happens.

    starting to happen on mine...

Well-directed spray-bottle stream (not mist) with water or maybe WD40 sprayer (with straw) can tell a lot when this is occurring.

I realize it's kind of a chore if it happens only off-idle. Mine started happening at idle, so it was easier. I needed to spray the back-side of the idler & tensioner with WD40 (engine running: careful, of course!) and the noise stopped immediately. So, I've got an idler to replace soon.

But, I'd also wonder if this could be a noise from the Vanos?

Or, there's a big mouse in there. ;)

maybe idler pulley or tensioner bearing

i just replaced all three on my S52 at 85k b/c of the random whirring. while the engine is running take a flashlight and watch the pulleys, see if they're wobbling. might as well replace belts since they're coming off too.<table width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">

Whrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound coming from up front , 2.8L

I thought it was the fan clutch slipping and free-wheel spinning that's creating this sound but can't really pin it down to this do to I have nobody to rev the engine when it occurs so randomly.

Could I be correct on this conclusion?, how else can I double check this, or could it be something else?, and what might that be?....?

Secondly; there's a noise that sounds like the fan blade hitting the radiator shroud. This has been random as well and I noticed it first time a year ago...very random it be.

I checked the clearances on the fan to shroud as well as looking for any type of damage to these parts and everything seems pristine
