    Thoughts:
Occasional low power may mean battery is about to die, or battery cable not attached securely (was probably disconnected during heater core job).
Cranking with no start means check for both spark and fuel pressure. Hard to narrow down better than that here on-line.
Whining when you press the gas: Check the rubber elbow from the MAF sensor to the throttle body. Chances are it is split where the finger-sized tube is inserted on the outboard side. If the elbow is OK, then go on to check for any other vacuum leaks typical of E36s at this age.

Re: e36 wont start at times help!!!

Personally, I would start by diagnosing any new work that has been done to the car, assuming this problem did not exist before the work was done. I just went through a series of troubleshooting steps myself on a problem that was linked to the shop not securing a wire on my new starter causing a host of mis-diagnosed problems.

e36 wont start at times help!!!

ok heres the situation. my m3 would start up but sometimes feels like it has low power when i turn the key, but 2 days ago it would just crank and not start. i would crank it until the battery dies, i jump start it and it would fire up right away and i can drive it. when i accelerate it makes a whinning noise until i shift and whines again when i press the gas. after driving it and letting it sit for at least 30 min it will crank and not start again. is there a problem with the alternator or battery? any ideas what the problem would be? i just recently had the heater core replaced, would something have happend after that? any info would help me out, let me know you thoughts.

    thanks,
    jays36
