    did you not ask them what an oil change and light bulb replacement will cost before you dropped the car off? If you did not, then you were just asking to be robbed.<B>

    Good Attitude...

    It seems when you DON'T ask for compensation, they fall all over themselves to give it. But if you get pushy, they react and shut you down entirely.

    It's been my experience. When I call those customer service numbers, I get put on hold, get angry and upset and they tell me to Piss Off.

    But when I send a nice letter, often things work out better, particularly if I document everything carefully.

    Excellent advice

    One issue is grand theft. The others are insignificant.

    FWIW, my radar decector was stolen while in the shop. I sent my service manager an email and said they should replace it. I told them I had lost a radar dector, but it was replaceable, so I was not out a great deal, even if they didn;t replace it, but they had a thief working for them, and they had a bigger problem. They replaced it.

    This is the wrong approach.....

    Sorry, but trying to slander them online never works. I've seen this before, again and again. It never works.

    It's like those kooks who paint "LEMON" on their car and park it in front of the dealer. The dealer loves it as people slow down to see what the fuss is all about and then stop and buy a car.

    If you paint yourself as an outraged kook, it makes it easier for the dealer to say, "Well, look at his arguments - tire pressure? Get real."

    You are undercutting your own case with these types of postings. for example, I doubt you've convinced many folks here of your case.

    Again, if you want to own a BMW out of warranty, you have to find a good independent mechanic or be a DIY with tools. Once these cars reach a certain age, they will need more and more service and they become costly - more costly than a newer car - if you have to go to a dealer.

    Put it in writing and mail it off to BMW NA. Posting here will not result in any satisfaction, except perhaps visceral.

    And from my standpoint all dealers everywhere are rip-offs (even the "honest" ones) so you are not telling me anything new....

    Concentrate on what is important. If you keep fixating on the tire pressure thing (they did adjust the tire pressure to factory specs, so there is no "fault" there) your legitimate complaint regarding the headlight assembly will be viewed less seriously.

    At least that is how it appears to a disinterested third party.

    The service writer should give you the name of the local zone rep, or contact BMW NA. BTW, they regularly troll these boards...

    Don't fall into the trap of "If you don't give me satisfaction, I will say nasty things about your dealership forever" as that rarely results in satisfaction. No one likes to be blackmailed.

    Write a letter to BMW NA, include documentation, photos of the headlight, receipt for the one you bought previously, state your case in a calm and clear manner, and leave out things like tire pressure and "topping off the oil".

    It that doesn't work, try small claims court. But if you go in there ranting about tire pressure, don't expect the judge to give you the time of day.

    FOCUS on what is important. Like I said, the customer service systems are designed to get you to be outraged and not focus your energies.... They intentionally BAIT you. Don't fall for it.

    How do I find the zone manager?

    The headlight assembly is a very BIG DEAL. The HID assemblies are $1200 items.

    I found and had seen your article prior to visiting the shop. (Google Search) I found it very informative, I told the Dealer how easy it would be but they insisted it was extremely hard & run 2 hours of labor.

    Its my opinion that my X5 4.4i w 18' Tires / Goodyear Response Edge max psi 44 - will run best w a tire pressure @ 39.5 psi -

    Out of warranty? Avoid the dealer

    If your car is out of warranty, avoid going to dealers. Even the honest ones have labor rates and overhead nearly twice that of a reliable independent BMW mechanic.

    And yes, there are crooked independent mechanics out there, too. But when you find a good one, hang onto him with both hands.

    Replacing the turn signal bulb is not all that hard, if you can turn a wrench. The bulb is about a dollar and it takes about an hour or less to replace. I have posted pictured on how to do this.

    Similarly, and oil change should not cost more than $50, even using Mobil 1 or other synthetic oils and a quality filter, if you do the work yourself. I use an oil extractor and it takes about 20 minutes to do.

    Doing the work yourself for small jobs is the key to owning an older car. You see, once a car is out of warranty, if you are not handy with tools, you should think about selling it.

    The older the car gets, the less and less it is worth, and the more cost-ineffective it is to take it somewhere to service it.

    My 2002 X5 is worth maybe $10,000 book value. Maybe. $500 for an oil change and to replace a turn signal is scandalous in any event, but just horribly cost-ineffective for a car with so little value. That is 5% of the resale value!

    But some specific advice for your situation:

    1. Contact the area zone manager (or BMW equivalent) who handles dealerships in your area. Going to the dealer is probably not going to solve anything. If the zone manager can't help, contact BMW NA.

    2. Send things in WRITING. Phone calls and e-mails rarely work, and phone calls are particularly ineffective. The dealer will try to get you to get "angry" by putting you on hold for a half hour and get you to "blow up" so that they can say you were being unreasonable. It is an old trick, it's called BAITING. And yea, every customer service place does it.

    3. Document everything. You say you put in a new headlight? Show the receipt for it. And take a digital picture of the headlight they put in. Send copies of all this in WRITING to the dealer, zone manager, and BMW NA.

    4. By the way, removing the old headlight is part of replacing the turn signal bulb. If the technician did something stupid like DROPPING the old headlight, it might explain why it was swapped.

    5. Check your owners manual for correct tire pressures. While some tires are rated for as high as 50-60 psi for max load, for daily driving, the recommended pressure may be far less - on the order of 28-35 psi. So they may have been merely "correcting" your tire pressures. CHECK YOUR OWNERS MANUAL.

    6. After changing the oil, the level may appear low on the dipstick (maybe one reason BMW did away with dipsticks). Let the engine sit for a half hour and check again. Oil settles in the crankcase over time.

    7. Have REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. Some folks in these sort of disputes want not only all their money back, but money for their "time and trouble" as well. Sounds silly, but I've seen it a lot. And it is easy to go overboard when you have been wronged.

    8. IS there some part of the story you are not telling us? $500 for the service you indicated seems suspiciously high. Did they do a routine service inspection as well (which would explain the tire pressure correction)? See #7 above. In consumer disputes, many consumers slant things their way, which only serves to undercut their original complaint.

    For example, the headlight assembly thing is a BIG DEAL. The HID assemblies are $1200 items. You dilute your argument with silly things like tire pressure and "topping off the oil" which are negligible trivial things. Focus on what is important, not on superficiality.

    If you go to the zone manager or BMW NA with silly arguments about tire pressure, they will tend to believe your headlight story a lot less. Or at least I would, if I was the zone manager or customer service rep.

    New Century BMW Alhambra / Worst Service / Thiefs

    I recently had one of the worst car experiences in my life. I went to New Century BMW in Alhambra to get an Oil Change and a Turn Light Bulb replaced. So I give them the keys and they take my car.

    An hour later I get back my BMW X5 4.4i but it looks and feels different.

    They Stole one of my BMWs New Headlight Assemblies and replaced it with an Old Dirty Diffused Cloudy Discolored Headlight Assembly! They also took the Air out of my Tires! My BMW X5's two front tires purposely flatten to 28 psi & the back ones to 32 psi, the new Tire Stems on my Goodyear Response Edge Performance Tires had been broken & twisted! ( These are 44 PSI Tires) & it seemed that they didn't even top off my Oil!!!!

    I was charged $500 to have my X5 trashed / Do not take your car to New Century BMW in Alhambra / There is no control there

    I need some help in fighting & correcting this, I contacted the Manager but he hasn't returned my call, do I need to contact the Better Business Bureau of the United States America -
