    I have tried the MotorProtect and it is fine so far. Best bet on cleaning sludge (preventive and Oops) seems to be AutoRX. It dissolves the "junk" but keeps it suspended in solution until you drain it. It works slowly over the change cycle, instead of being a really harsh chemical you need to remove quickly. It really did a fantastic job on the the e39 - quieted a few lifters that had started ticking (difference was noticeable idling/driving). Check out their web site if interested.

    I recently did the valley pan/valve covers on the 540 - you would not believe the sludge at 146,000! That caused me to investigate and clean other areas, like dropping the oil pan to scrape it with a plastic paint scraper (sludge was up to 3/4" thick). The 15,000 mile change interval is criminal at best.

    Changing your oil every 3-5,000 is the cheapest insurance you can get for the longest life of your engine. Do not go over 5,000 in my opinion - synthetic or not. Once you develop a sludge problem you will be in a world of hurt, but you will bring endless joy to the service tech.

    Try a 15/16 inch, its very close. If not try a 1

    inch 6 point.

    This IS the best and excellent advice, Cantanzaro. I obsessed over what oil to put in the 750 and read everything I could. I've changed my own oil on my '95 525i since it has been off warranty and went full synthetic a few years ago with that engine. The fact is that today's oil is better than ever and as long as you are staying with a name/trusted brand and are mindful of your personal driving habits, frequency of changes is the key.

    In the Northeast I'm concerned about condensation after winter months so I do twice a year on both cars, one in early spring and the other in mid to late fall.

    On the tools, where is the best place to get them? I couldn't find a 24mm socket at retailers here, not that I went all out trying to find it but even the guy at Sears (I liked Craftsman tools) looked at me funny! And I'm sure that there is a better hex set (i.e. one that goes into a ratchet) better than the allen key-type with a handle...

    system in this engine is sensitive and needs good clean oil and the 15000 mile stuff is BS in my opinion and asking for trouble.

    I would not be to concerned about the oil that was put in your car. I would be more concerned about frequency intervals. I would suggest you change your oil every 5K miles and no more than 7.5K (not 15K), way too long no matter what type of oil you have. Remember that these engines are very highly engineered and to fix a problem requires between $5,000 and $7,500 (from what I have heard). It is in your best interest to keep that oil changed so there is no sludge build up.

    If you want to change the oil yourself, it is a breeze. There are 3 tools required. The drain plug has a socket, the filter has 2 sockets. Remember to get the 24mm 6 point socket. Jack up the car, remove the small plug for the oil filter to drain the oil out of the filter, then drain the oil and lastly remove the filter housing.

    The tools will run you about $75 plus the oil and filter for the first go around. After that you can change your oil for $50, while other places will charge you $125 to $150.

    I would contact Bav Auto and talk to them about oil. The Lubro Molly sold in the 5 quart is the best oil on the street for the price. Made in Germany for German cars. You can use Amsoil or Castorl Edge (top end oils). That is what I would use in your situation.

    I personally change my oil 2X per year and use the Castrol 100% Synthetic Oil in a 5 quart container. I pick it up for $22. The oil is $44 (9 quarts) and the filter is about $8 (Mann)

    Hope this helps. If you need further help, please touch base. I have been changing oil in cars since I was 12 years old. I have even used the cheapest oil you can find @ Wal Mart in a Lexus (every 3K) and drove the car to 250K miles without any problems or concerns. The new owner is at 312K @ this moment.

    After a service visit here's the email I sent to the shop (what do you think):


    I had my oil changed today among other things and noticed the use of Quaker State European 5w-40 Synthetic, I've never use this brand of oil and didn't know it was approved for my E66, when I checked the BMW site I didn't find it on the recomended list and I noticed a sticker on my windshield that states an oil change is due in 7,500 miles while my car states 15,000. Can you advice on this? Here's what I found and the link:

    Required maintenance work or services should be performed for your vehicle by your authorized BMW center.

    BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil is recommended for scheduled engine oil changes.

    BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Oil* (BMW part number 07 51 0 017 866)

    * Does not apply to M vehicles - see below

    BMW recommends that you check your engine oil level whenever you add fuel to your vehicle.

    If you need to add oil between oil changes and BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil is unavailable, you may top up the oil level with one of the following approved synthetic oils. For information on checking your engine oil level refer to your vehicle's Owner's Manual.

    The oils listed below meet BMW's Long-life rating and are acceptable for use in BMW Passenger vehicles and SAVs in the US market with gasoline engines.

    BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market:

    · Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30

    · Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40

    · Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30

    · Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

    Use only oils with an API rating of SM or higher.

    The choice of the right SAE grade is based on the climatic conditions in the region in which you normally drive your BMW.

    Use only oils with an API rating of SJ/CF, SK/CF or higher.

    The following is a listing of synthetic oils recommended and approved for use in the BMW B7 ALPINA in the US market:

    Thanks for the email.

    Quaker State is a European blend that is used in Porsche, Mercedes, BMW . It is actually better than the oils on the recommended list. Castrol is used in the motorsports cars because Castrol is the only one that makes the 10W60 oil.

    The consumer should have their oil changed in their vehicles every 6000 miles. We have seen nightmares when people wait for their “free” 15,000 mile service. The oil turns to sludge sometimes, it can ruin crank cases and vacuum hoses, etc. PLUS it is good to have someone just look over your car before 15000 miles just in case a hose is getting ready to blow, your tire pressure is off, and other things waiting to happen that the customer is unaware of. The 15000 miles service is unjust to the consumer. It is doing no one any favors except for the people who give it away for “free.”
