Likely cause for running lean is a cracked vacuum line some place.
Something to check while you're into the plugs. You'll have the top cover off the engine which makes it easier to see stuff.

Ok- Went out and worked on it more. The car gave me an error code (by turning ignition on and quickly stepping on the gad 5 times within 5 seconds): 1222. Which translated means it's running lean. So, it's now on to checking fuel pressure, etc... At least I know it's not a ping sensor.

Wait, just realized. This is an M50. Don't these have individual coils and no distributor?

Hey Dusty- That's a good idea. Since the timing isn't adjustable, didn't even think of looking at the distributor cap.

The car has 115K on it and the plugs are overdue for a change (just bought the car). I'm going to change the plugs, filters and such this week. Was also thinking that the fuel filter is bad and preventing adequate fuel flow.

Check your distributor cap and rotor, if badly worn,
could arc to the wrong plug...

How long since you replace the plugs and wires, they
    could also cause problems...

    525i Pinging w/Premium Fuel- Thoughts?

Hello- When under load (gently climbing a hill), my 95 525i gently knocks and pings. This is even with premium fuel. Car is an automatic and totally stock. The rpm's are at about 2K-3K and I'm not giving it much gas. This even happens with premium fuel (chevron and shell).

    Any thoughts?

    My thought are:
    - Bad ping sensors
    - Bad fuel pressure

That's as far as I've thought.
