    Current to the coil?

Sorry you are having such a rough time. You said the coil is fine, you installed new wires, and the plugs are new. I can think of two alternatives:

    1. Is there power going to the coil?
    2. Is the distributor faulty?

Let us know, we'll fix it yet.

Just yesterday, my 1981 320i quit on a local road. The fuse that powers the fuel pump had vibrated out of its holder. I reinserted it and made sure the ends were seated in the little holes in the holding prongs, and it was fine thereafter.

Re: 82 320I STARTS UP AND CUTS OFF? NOW NOT AT ALL?

Pappy, a small amount of fuel will come out, which can easily be contained in a oil drain pan or similiar. the flow will not continue. its not a bad idea to replace the large hose that comes from the top of the tank and feeds the main fuel pump. Likewise, its a good time to replace the small peice of hose that comes off the in tank pump. this hose lives inside the tank so it has a tough life.

Re: 82 320I STARTS UP AND CUTS OFF? NOW NOT AT ALL?

You need to get a handle on the problem-is it fuel or spark? get someone to turn it over while you check at a spark plug for spark. I suspect you will, because that type of problem is frequently fuel, but you still need to know about spark. If you dont have spark, check the coil, coil wire, distributor, etc.
If you do have spark, check fuel from start to finish, ie: does it have fuel in tank? is fuel pump working? is fuel making it to the engine? and finally, the control pressure regulator, injectors, cold start injector, and if all that seems good, vacuum leaks will have that effect on a 320 also, and there arte a million things that can cause that. bad rubber intake boot, vacuum lines perished, manifold gasket, etc.
