Severe enough to cause vibration and... have the head condemned by BMWNA and replaced under warranty! Since the change I've put on about 1500 miles and it's been absolutely great. Faster off the line and very peppy on the road at BMW speeds. If you have the N 52 engine and it has tapping you might be eligible for a new replacement head. Your 07 should still be under warranty. Even if it isn't BMWNA, to keep you as a "loyal" customer may at least look into the problem and come up with a satisfying solution:>)

Re: What problems do the E60 models have? How severe was your knocking? My 2007 525xi pings at start-up but not severe vibration but I'm worried about problem getting worse (of course after warranty expires). Thanks for any advice you can give.

Re: What problems do the E60 models have? As some of you you may know, at 9800 miles the engine head on my '08 528i needed to be bled and 12 pushrods (Hydraulic Valve Adjusters) replaced. Car now has 16000 miles and the knocking started again at cold and warm startups. Long story short, brought car to dealer this past Mon. for regular service, told them the problem reappeared. BMW NA "condemned" the head and the dealer is replacing it with a new complete factory head! The new head is an improved version. There has been a service bulletin out for a long while concerning this problem with the N52 engine. Hope this helps anyone with similar problem. Drive Fast Drive Safe 08 528i 00 528i
Re: What problems do the E60 models have? Not that they are the same, but I had the same issue with my 3. After multiple trips to the dealer, and the replacement of all but 1 of the coils, they sent my car back to Greenville, SC, where they completely ripped out and replace the wiring harness. You may want to have them do the same for you if its still under warranty... the problem will only get worse my friend
Re: What problems do the E60 models have? No issues really at 60k, although only mine for 1k. Lots nicer than previous E39 540/6 that it replaced. Bigger though and it looks just fine from inside.
Re: oops one more thing There’s problem with the 320D Sport. Because its’ lower and stiffer than the regular setup, the car looks sleeker, however as you’ve realized too, the trade off is a harder ride. I usually end up driving much slower since my car gets bumped off line while cornering.

Re: What problems do the E60 models have? In the same boat as you. Ready for an E60. Any luck finding one? What problems do the E60 models have? (1177 views) (2753 thread views) Message: I currently have an E39 540/6. This model has a long list of consistant problems - radiator, front end shimmy, window regulators, dirty sock smell, seats creaking, radio failure - I could go on. It's been a good 7 years and it's time to move on. I'm looking at either a E90 3 series or E60 5 series xiT wagon. I have found several with sport packages and 6 speed manuals. Can anyone help me with some feed back on the E60 and the problems they have had? Thank you ahead of time for the feedback.
Re: What problems do the E60 models have? On E60: while driving the engine sputters for a fraction of a second--seems OK , but concerning. Dealer said nothing wrong--but within minutes did it again, and again.
Re: What problems do the E60 models have? How did you get the radio working agaain?
The only one I know of.... A fat a$$!

Re: oops one more thing Hey Merlin, need your help. email me when u get a minute. [email protected] I gather that you have an E31 and E60. I own a 97 E31 and wanted to get your take on the differences between the drivability of the older Bimmers vs the E60. My 31 is solid as a rock but I test drive a used 60 today and was not impressed. Is that just an issue with the older bimmers vs. the newer, lighter, etc. ones or was I just driving a crappy one? Just looking for your take.
oops one more thing Those with sport suspensions will also be forced to have Active Roll which places an ill programmed computer and servo between sway bar halves front and rear to augment cornering under high lateral loads. This makes the car really toss-able in the turns, BUT, it also has little to nothing for a null zone about center in the control logic algorithms. Consequently those with the Dunlop’s delivered on 2008 models will note that the car continuously twitches on freeway grooves that match the ones in the tire. I installed Dinan camber plates and stronger [not stiffer] Bilstein sports which helps some and make turn in more predictable as well. There is a software upgrade from the factory for the ARS, but it still doesn't really solve the problem. For the first time ever, I wish I had not purchased a new BMW with Sport Suspension - should have done 550 and M5 upgrades to the stock 535 for a more predictable and reliable setup. HTH

Re: What problems do the E60 models have? I have a 6 spd manual with the Dinan [BMW approved] software upgrade. Apparently there is a known issue with the software for the DTC under WOT that causes engine to go into braking mode if wheel spin is detected. The car has to be pulled over immediately and recycled 3-4 times before lights will go out and it becomes drivable again. Dealer is working the problem with BMW and Dinan. THe software is great when it works and if you never go to WOT under heavy load, then you are in good shape. I just happen to find it totally unacceptable. HTH RM
Re: What problems do the E60 models have? See 2 bimmermanNY post above. I'm also trying to find out more about E60 problems. The reason for the dirty sock smell? The cabin air filters need changing. See bimmerhead post above.
