Little Foreign Garage on Watertown/Waltham line

Tell them Derek sent you. If I let others work on my car, I would go to them. The shop foreman drives a sweet 2002 and they have experience with e30s. Good luck.

Dereck...thx a bunch for you explanation. That actually makes sense. I am actually frustrated with this guy (father who is a mechanic who did the work). I talked to him about it and he said if we have to take it off, we will. But, i no longer feel compfortable with his work so I may take it some where else. BTW, i am in boston as well. Do you know anyone whom you know who could do this for me?

I don't think the spring should move at all. The strut housing and "spring hat" should orient the spring in such a way that it won't move once everything is assembled. I'm wondering if he left out #8 (washer) in the diagram. This washer lets shock move within the strut mount as the assembly is turned. The strut mount has a set of ball bearings riding between an inner and outer sleeve where it makes contact with the spring hat. If the washer is left out, the entire strut assembly maybe catching on that outer sleeve. It makes sense that the noise goes away when the nut is backed off of. I'm going to go with the washer. Unfortunately, you'll need to take everything apart to fix it.

    Here's the diagram:

Let me know what you think about that.

    Noise from spring when turn

I have been tackling this issue for quite some time now and looking for some answers. After i had my mechanic install new Koni's all the way arround (kept my old Eiback sprints), i have been noticing this annoying slight noise when turning during parking manuvering. The noise is a low ting (like a spring noise). We determined at some point it's comming from the upper right strut housing. With the car up on the lift, i had the guy turn steering very slowly while i was watching spring behvoir. And voila. It looks like when the lower botton of the spring starts turning, the upper part does not turn. At some piont, the upper part catches on with the turn and make that NOISE. This tells me that the spring is not moving freely allong with the rubber piece (or vise versa) inside the housing. My mechanic decided to loosen the upper strut nut a bit (on top, and voila, noise dissapeared. When he tried to tighten back up, noise is back. So, he had told me that it's ok if the nut is a bit loose (while the 3 stut mount nuts are fully tight). But now after 2 months of driving...i am getting this mettalic sound when i go on bumps. Please, let me know what I should do. I am trying to avoid taking the right strught off again to see what's going on. Any recommendations would help...
