Won't fit becaues the I6 uses rack and pinion (m)

steering and 540 doesn't. The subframes on both vehicles are different.
I don't exactly remember the routing of the I6 sway bar, however the 540 routes it above the front subframe. It sticks out on both sides and then makes it way to the front links.
Never removed one from an I6, for the V8 you need to drop the subframe (and engine) a few inches....lots of fun but worth it for the bigger bar.

Jim, why won't the front M5 fit on the 528iT ?

on the 840 we had a bit of an issue fitting the 850csi bars. The solution was to use spacers under the sway bar bushing (3mm thick) and that pushed the bar down that it cleared the trans bellhousing.

Is the issue similar or its the mounting points ?

While the iT may have some differences with it's (

rear suspension there are a lot of parts that are the same.
Here are the 2 sway bar options for a 3/98 528 sport and non-sport iT.
    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...26&hg=33&fg=45

Here are the sway bars for the 3/98 528i sedan.
    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...17&hg=33&fg=45

And the sway bars for a 3/98 540
    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...17&hg=33&fg=45

The p/n's for all 3 are the same, and an M5 rear bar will fit on a sedan so it will also fit on an iT.

    Mark, I answered your email.

Re: while not a big upgrade they had a euro sport

    01 Stabilizer, rear D=15MM 1 33531093816 $159.68
    02 Stab rubber mountD=15MM 2 33551093795 $8.79

I think this is it.. .

its actually 2mm thicker then the non-sport (13mm) and 1mm thicker then the sport version in the US (14mm)

thats a decent upgrade for the price if you really need it.

    the front is here

    01 Stabilizer, front D=25MM 1 31351092466 $170.72

this is only a 1mm thicker compare to the US sport version, but 2.5mm thicker then the non-sport version.

Remember when setting sways, the difference is always in percentage and not linear ! a 1mm rear sway bar thickness will make a difference when its about 13 or 14 or 15mm but not so much if you have a 25 or 25 or 27mm...

the thicker rear sway bar alone will reduce understeer but if you upgrade the front the same percentage then it will not reduce the under-steer just make the car lean less. the front/rear balance of the sway bar is more important then the overall diameter.

a good shock with a properly set spring will do more then a thick sway bar which can put too much stress on the shocks, springs, etc.

imho the 528iT is a well balanced car specially with the sport suspension. a euro sport sway bar setup will enhance that and will make it even better. Anything more might turns the comfortable car into a bit of a jiggery car on rough road surfaces.

while not a big upgrade they had a euro sport

version. Front was 1 or 1.5mm thicker the rear was only about half or a 1mm thicker. With the sport suspension it might help a little.

The rear is a problem, as the rear suspension is totally different then the sedans.

The front looked as it would fit... but Jim pointed out that it actually does not.

Don't know whats the issue on the front but the rear suspension is completely diff so I think that the euro sport version is the only cheap option.

by the way why do you need it ? The car seems very well balanced and not in a need of much of anything. Before you change anything drastic, make sure that you have a set of fresh bushings, ball joints, shocks, rear subframe bushings in the rear and same on the front. Install a set of lowering springs and I think it will be more then enough for the street.

and since its a 528iT nobody would take it to a track, right ?

The front M5 bar will not fit on a 528. The rear (

bar IIRC will fit. Did you look in www.RealOEM.com to comfirm the rear bar will indeed fit?
I got mine from BMW when they has a sale many years ago. Don't forget to get the M5 rubber bushings as the M5 bar is thicker.
