    Couldn't agree more about the winter being anti-roadster. I'd just hate to think that only folks in one season states could enjoy them. For my part, though driving is very limited by the weather during winter, I don't store mine, and drive it as often as road conditions allow.

    Buying the same car twice says a lot about one's appreciation for the type. I'd sure like to think that my situation sort of reflects the same thing. (o;

    Terry, I believe my post shows where my sentiments are. The car loved so much it was bought twice!

    Our Zs have their limitations, which I won't pretend to be blind to, but I can't think of any car I'd rather have for what I paid for it! And this time I live in a place where I can enjoy it safely every day. No more 4 month (or more) storage for the winter!

    Good to see you back on the forum. Hope Cedar Rapids is still treating you well. I miss my buddies at European Motors. They always liked to see the M Roadsters roll up!

    MY M Terry, MY M. I have no idea what you guys in Iowa are still doing. Us 1998 S52s will just have to get by on our 240, no traction control and cheaper oil.. :)

    So you are talking about 25hp difference, in a narrow band range, over a stock ///M. Heck, you can pump horsepower into a pick up truck if you want.

    Every guy can enjoy whatever car he likes, or owns at the moment. On this board, the sentiment is likely to lean towards the E36 Z-series.

    And that car wouldn't smoke my ///M, though admittedly it is far from stock. (o;

    TOTALLY different car. I'd like to drive one myself! 340 hp @5300 RPM would definitely smoke the M! Looks like fun!

    This guy is enjoying his TT Roadster...

    A few trips around Goodwood in the MK2 version of the Audi TT. Drive one yourself and see if you like it...

    Another thing to bear in mind is whether the TT is a real sports car. Despite the turbo engine and the 4WD, the original TT was built on a VW Golf platform. Although based on the E36 sedan/coupe platform at least the Z3 is built on a RWD chassis. The Z3 has a mcuh more sporting lineage.

    I owned both back to back

    Had my M Roadster for 5 years, then sold it to a friend and bought a 2002 TT 225 Q Roadster with the 6-speed. I was looking for a true 4 season sports car for the Midwest.

    Here is what i can tell you:


    1. The TT I thought had a nicer interior and felt a little more solid and well made overall. You can't beat Audi when it comes to interiors.

    2. The TT felt more solid as a car overall as well. Less cowl shake. The doors are high. I'm 5'8'' and it does feel a little like a bathtub. I'm a big fan of Porsche 356s, so I was ok with it, but I like to do the "elbow hang" as well.

    3. Defrosted glass window and a retractable glass wind deflector was pretty nice after the mesh and plastic in the M.

    4. The TT had all the same bells and top, heated seats, Bose stereo, plus the xenon lights, which are WAY better than the candles we call lihts in our cars..


    4 cyl either like them or you don't. The 225 is peppy, but I missed the "instant on" power of the BMW 6. The 225 seems to accelerate at strange times when you hit the gas, amd I never got used to it. And, as my mechanic told me when I told him the engine seemed to vibrate a lot more than the M. he said "You were spoiled."

    Quattro...great in snow and rain. Very solid. Makes the car heavy, and a little sluggish when pushed. As Vidterry mentioned, it's more "GT" than "sport".

    The TT looks "newer", or at least it did before the 2nd gen came out. The z3 is more "classic".

    Oh, and I sold it and bought back my M after I moved out to Portland, OR., so that should tell you something.

    Make sure you test drive one first

    Before you spend too much time pursuing this, get yourself into one and give it a spin. (I know that is obvious before purchasing any given vehicle, but in this case, it may be worth your time before even expending energy on the search in general). I drove one and the entire time I felt like I was in an old bathtub. The doors are so tall that you can't rest an arm on them as I prefer to do. So I felt all cooped up even with the top down. Regardless of performance specs, that was enough to convince me that I would never buy one.

    To be honest, I don't know that the TT would ever have gotten me out of a Z3 - I just love the looks of the Z3 and the TT doesn't come close to that. So it was fighting an uphill battle. But that bathtub feel was something I would never overcome, so the case was closed.

    No first hand info but a friend had one.

    He kept it for about 9 months. It had a bunch of small issues. He's used to Audis as he has had several AllRoads. One re-occurring one was it kept popping a hose off the intercooler. He wasn't too impressed with it and swapped it for a 1966 TR4 project.

    That is news to me. I just saw a Motor Trend segment on YouTube that shows this exact car to run a 5.9 second 0-60 with it's 225 HP engine. After watching and exploring a bit it seems very equal to my 3.0L Z3. I'll need to find some Audi forums to find out what I am asking about repairs and problems in ownership,

    For what it is worth...

    Back in the day, when the car mags did performance comparos of the roadsters, they usually excluded the Audi TT. The explanation was that the car was designed -- and performed -- as a 'touring' roadster rather than a high performance roadster. If you can get access to the mags from back then, you could find the description of why that particular car wasn't tested with the high performance roadsters.

    Z3 vs Audi TT

    Just saw a beautiful low mileage 2001 Audi TT convertible for sale with the 225 HP engine which is equal to our 3.0L output. I think the Z3 looks much better but how is the Audi TT overall compared to the Z3? Just as many quirky issues or better?
