Northern Tool has a lighter pigtail but you have to adapt it to the battery tender which is fairly easy with another adapter. I have hardwired the adapter to my battery terminals with the pigtail accessible from the trunk. Michael 00e39 540 sport 6 speed

Same place you would connect jumper cables... If connecting under the hood...look for the black cap with the + on it for the positive connection (connect Red Clip), and for the Negative (Ground) connection, look for a bolt on top of the strut tower housing on the passenger side (connect black clip). Personally, I prefer to connect a battery tender directly to the battery in the trunk, some people also connect into the cigarette lighter using an adapter...not sure which method is best though. same connections used for jump start I believe the owners manual has pics. Although the charger may be more efficient connected to the battery itself. @ 1-3 amps; you will be relying on the cable and connection condition. Any corrosion or resistance to the electrical flow at the distance, may negate the under hood convenience.

Red goes to the nut under the plastic cover >> on the left valve cover, marked "+". Black goes to a bolt on the left shock tower. There is a bigger stud on the right shock tower, but the leads are probably too short to reach. Ed in San Jose. BMW CCA member since 1987 (Nr. 62319). Golden Gate Chapter. '97 540i 6 speed. Battery Tender hookups I just bought a Battery Tender for my 540. How do I connect the positive(red) and negative(black) alligator clips inside the engine compartment?
