Re: The valley pan was filled with crud... To replace the VP you need to remove the two metal tubes first. To do that you either have to remove the waterpump or to rear crossover between the back of the two heads. I like to remove the waterpump, it's up front and easy to get at. You should try to figure out where all of that crud came from.
Re: The valley pan was filled with crud...
The valley pan was filled with crud... It was a mess of oil, some antifreeze and gloppy material that sort of resembled very soft slate that held it's shape until I pressed a screwdriver into it to break it apart. It wasn't actually filled. The dirty stuff rose to the height of the black plastic valley pan cover but not on top of it. What would I be looking at with respect to the tubes? They look metallic to me. I haven't been loosing too much if any coolant that I recall. I can't wait to get my car back together and start driving it again. I've owned this car for over 8 years and I still miss driving it if I go beyond a few days without it. Thanks,

It's OK 2wash out the intake manifold, but first( I'd remove the nuts that hold the fuel rail in place and take it and the injectors off. The injectors will stay attached to the fuel rail if you leave the top clips in place. The bottom of the injectors are just stuck into the manifold with a o-ring to seal them. Pretty easy to remove the whole works, just pull up after you remove the nuts. Dawn dishwashing liquid and hot water does a great job of cleaning oil and grease. I saw your post above about the oil separater, you don't want to go there unless you were having problems that a ned CCV didn't fix. You will need to pull off the front timing chain cover to get at it. Valley pan and t coolant pipes look OK? You may want to just give the bolts that hold the VP down a slight turn to make sure all of them are tight enough, don't over do it.

It's all apart. Is there anything else I should do while I'm in here? I don't have plans on going back into the engine anytime soon. I have the valve covers off and the intake manifold out. The intake manifold is an oily mess and a pretty sizable piece of carbon (I think)in a circular shape about 1/2 inch thick fell out of the intake manifold when I set it CCV side down of the floor. I plan on wiping down all of the oil everywhere and cleaning inside and outside of the intake tubes but is there anything else I should do now that I have the car all apart? I'm guessing this is a terribly dumb question but can I put the intake manifold in hot soapy water to clean it? The injectors and fuel tube are still attached. I know water and gas don't mix but it can let it sit until all of the water evaporates. Thanks,

You could do it that way or what I usually do is ( Pull the last section of plastic tubing off and stick it on the CCV fitting. Bolt the CCV onto the back of the IM. Hold the metal tube up and slide the plastic tube in while you move the IM forward. 3 hands would make it easier.

Re: There's 10 nuts that hold the intake manifold on(m Jim got a question about that tube. When the intake is lifted off does this tube just fall of the back of the intake? and how is it put back on? do u have to put it in the same time the intake is being put back on the motor? LOL.....is this positive or negative motivation?
There's 10 nuts that hold the intake manifold on(m It's just stuck, gaskets to the heads. Give it a whack on both the left and right sides with a rubber mallet or a "BMW certified 2x4". I assume you will be replacing the 4 intake gaskets, the profile gaskets for the CCV and maybe the throttle body(TB) and it's adapter plate. Clean out the oil inside the bottom of the intake, you should remove the TB and note how the tube from the rear to the front clips into place before you remove it. Look at the back side of the intake valves, any carbon build up? Any on the runners? Get a bunch of 6mm x 1.0 x 25 bolts to replace all of the torx head bolts, much easier to deal with if you ever need to remove the CCV again without removing the intake manifold. Does the valley pan gasket or the 2 coolant tubes show any signs of leaking?

Two last questions... Now I have the valve covers off and I've loosened all of the intake manifold bolts but the manifold won't budge. Are there more than the 8 or 10 bolts on top? My plan is to change the CCV and a bunch of other gaskets the dealer sold me as well as the valve cover gaskets. Are there other things I should do while I have all of this stuff apart? Thanks
Two last questions...
2 grand! I just got off the driver's side valve... cover and I disconnected the fuel line. The fuel line was not big deal at all. I would upload a picture but that would be more difficult that the job itself... If I get stuck again please post more cost data to keep me going! Thanks for your help.

Thanks fellas. I'm giving it another shot but... I thought this would be easy since I've previously replaced the water pump, thermostat and struts (and a host of other things) but this one is much harder to figure out since there are so many more tiny parts that are difficult to get to. If I can't get it done this week I may have to flat bed it to the dealer with a bag of parts and let them finish the job. How much do think they'll charge for labor for the CCV and valve cover gaskets? Thanks,
Thanks fellas. I'm giving it another shot but...
Don't bother to replace the retainer clips>> the conduit boxes will hold the connectors in place. You do need the clip on cylinder #8. Ed in San Jose. BMW CCA member since 1987 (Nr. 62319). Golden Gate Chapter. '97 540i 6 speed. Build Date 3/97. Aspensilber over Aubergine leather.
