interesting site... will have to check to see

which ABS module I have... meantime, my traction and abs light come on at startup... then go off... then come back on after a few seconds... abs works while the lights are off... but doesn't work when their on... very odd behaviour. I'm guessing a scan should be the next move...Dan 98 528i[IMG]

my dealers computer said BOTH wheel sensors

they replaced both and light returned . Dealer good willed the ABS computer, reduced the install time & coding to one hour. Computers are not always accurate even MODAC BMW uses

When this happened to our '01 E46, it turned out to be the steering column angle sensor that failed, although any of the wheel sensors could have caused the same combination of dash warning lights. It took the dealer's computer to identify which one. I don't know whether your '98 even has a steering column angle sensor, but you probably need to have the dealer hook it up to find the specific failure.

Traction control light and ABS light

Hi all... need help diagnosing this problem... both my traction control light and ABS light come on, then three starts later, they go off, only to come on again after driving a few minutes. This has been going on a week now or more... We've been in a major deep freeze here in Calgary for a month now...and wondering if something like a wheel sensor might be freezing up?? Thanks!
