    Here's a pic of the drain/weep holes

    Picture of weep holes Jim was talking about. From what Ive read and experienced the valley pan is a slow inconsistent leak not severe like you mentioned.

    Lots of good write ups including valley pan if you need it.

    It was in the link but I wasn't exactly sure what

    I was looking at, I've never seen anything like that before. I'm mostly familiar with old American v8's and Japanese 4 and 6 bangers, I'm not that familiar with BMWs. I have no idea what the function of that plate is, I'm going to guess it's part of the water jacket, instead of being cast in, it's bolted on? Everything on this car is different than what I'm used to, and a real education. Thanks for all your help.

    If it's the valley pan the 2 drain holes for it (m

    will drain coolant between the block and the flywheel. It will then come out the holes at the bottom of the tranny.
    If it's not the valley pan or the connecting pipe between the back of the heads or the hoses back there, then it's coming from the cover on the back of the block. That requires the flywheel to be removed to gain access to fix it.

    JimLev and BC, what does it mean if it's leaking

    behind the flywheel? BC, what plate did you have to replace? I have severe leak and the fluid appears to be coming out the inspection hole in the bellhousing. I'm hoping it's the valley pan gasket as I don't want to think of what I'm up against if it's not......

    I went to 3 home depots and they didnt have the right size bolts. Im gonna hit the mom and pop hardware store monday. They always have what i need.

    IIRC that plastic cover just snaps on to the (m)

    heads of the nuts that hold the VP down. I reused mine, no need to spend extra $$ for nothing.
    Looks like you have all of the parts needed, just get some 6mm x 1.0 x 25mm bolts to replace the torx bolts on the CCV. Home Depot or Lowes should have them.

    Thats what i was thinking but every write up i see on the valley pan included this in the parts list. It doesn't even look like its held down by anything.
    You see anything Im missing or anything that will probably break during this work that i should get?

    You shouldn't really need part #2 on your list (m)

    It's just a plastic cover that goes over the top of the valley pan to keep junk from collecting in it.
    IIRC, it is also suppose to isolate some of the engine noise too. You should be able to use your old one again.

    Update. super shopping list

    Confirmed its the valley pan today, made a shopping list and got a price quote from I added the CCV, throttle body gasket and a couple of other parts that would be dumb to leave out.

    Anybody see anything I'm missing?? Anything i should order OE BMW instead of aftermarket?

    Definitely check the hoses

    I had a leak back there on the wife's 99 540 and that's what it was. Not much fun to replace but better than the valley pan gasket.

    You know, I didn't really consider that at the time. I don't know why but my experience with German cars is that the bolts don't seemt to seize up and break near as often as Jap and Domestic stuff. RT

    I had the typical minor slow leak from the valley pan maybe two years ago. I put about 1/4 of the pellets from a Barrs Stop Leak container into the lower chamber of the radiator expansion tank. I have been leak free since. My car has been very reliable overall.

    Ghetto fix, but it working very well. Not sure if it will help your cause, or if you dare put strange crap in your car, but thought I would mention it as possible option on the cheap.

    I love the car when its running right but I'm always scared to drive it like it supposed to be driven. Everytime I have a little spirited drive there's a new coolant leak or coolant explosion. I cant understand how my 25 year old 325 is driven at REDLINE almost ALL the time and never has leaks or problems and a 2000 v8 BMW has soo many weak points.
    I want to throw in the towel but ive gone through almost every e39 problem on this car and fixed it. i feel like i will just be starting from the beginning again with another BMW if i sell this one.
    I dont mind the work but I'm disabled and being stranded is even harder when u cant walk to far.

    Yup, one of the new leaks I found was coolant

    In fact this post by Whorse was almost identical to what I started seeing in the last month and a 1/2 or so. My valley pan also looked dry, and the heater hoses appeared to be dry as well, so it all pointed to the back of the engine and/or an internal leak in the AC's Evaporator/Expansion Valve. The coolant leak was not huge, but it was not consistent either - it did not happen every single time I drove the car. But as I mentioned in my Good-Bye note, I simply could not find enough time with all of my recent/frequent travel to properly diagnose and repair the problem(s). I still had a few oil and ATF leaks in the PS reservoir that I was trying to get fix (more of an annoyance), but this coolant leak was the main thing that had me worried about possibly being stranded, so that was the final factor to let the 540i go. I really miss my 540i but now I don't have to worry about being left stranded.

    The endless leaks on the 540 was a primary factor for me when deciding to get rid of it. Even after a leak was repaired, I constantly worried and looked under the car in anticipation of the next one. Shouldn't have to worry so much about a car.

    Interesting that William also mentioned leaks on his car as deciding factor to move on. IMO, the 540 is fun but life is too short to fret over it.

    broke one of those bolts that go into the back of the head it would be a bummer of a job to get it out.
    Whorse, when you do the CCV get yourself M6 x 1.0 x 25 mm bolts to replace those torx bolts.
