There was a typ 953 as well. Predated the 959 and had 4wd. Jacky Ickx drove one of them.

No, but Eurosport covers it every night...
Porsche used to run 959s in the early 1980s. Many manufacturers explored and developped in this rallye. Honda built twin cylinder engines with driveshaft (like a good old Honda Shadow) with big travel suspensions. Then they sold those bikes to the public. BMW's own RG was developped from the Paris-Dakar too. In Europe, they have a lot of big bore off-road bikes equipped with bigger tanks, side and top cases. Going to work becomes a rallye evry morning.

I started watching it 25 years ago when... ...privateers had chances to win a podium. Back then, people could add a larger fuel tank, bring some tools and a few spare tires around their neck (no kidding) and hope to touch ther finish line. One such rider, a French motorcycle journalist whose name I forgot but worked for Moto Journal, did just that. A soft gaz tank across his road going BMW which he modified by raising the suspension (there was no off-road Bimmers at that time), a few spare tires across his chest and here he went. It lasted only a year or two, until the big sponsors and car/bike makers poured their big money. Then civil war hit in Mauritania. They started shooting at contestants, a few died. It has been a long time since I watched that race, maybe the most sensationnal of all times... Just like a Canonball Run on hyper steroids.

Will be. Definitely worth watching! Seeing the amazing scenery in the middle stages was just jaw-dropping. I think I'd like to try it someday, assuming I have the fundings and fitness required, of course! <img src="http://members.roadfly.org/pmiranda/TMCM_anim.gif"> 02 LeMansBlue/Silverstone M5 98 EstorilBlue/Grey M3
