    For your use of the car, it will make it a better highway cruiser since you'll have an OD to lower the cruising rpm and save a little gas (the other 4 gears are identical ratios to the 4-speed). If you can do the work yourself you can do this swap for about $200 in parts plus the cost of the trans, which will range from $300-500 for a good used one. If you pay someone else to do the work, you'll probably need to add $600-$700 to that total.

    For another buyer, if a 5 speed is something they want I'd think it would get you a few more bucks. To a knowledgable e3 buyer it's unlikely to recoup more than the original $300-500 cost of the trans on a really nice car, and on a car of lesser value it might swing the dial $100-150...

    Thanks. Wow, $300? I was wondering also, would there be a great benefit from swapping the 4 speed with the 5... do you know?

    In my experience, $5,000 was a strong offer. Bav/3.0S's are sadly quite underappreciated. Even pristine cars seldom get more than $4-$5,000. I bought my Bav for $300, all it needed was a driveline and a good cleaning. I drove it for a few months, and friend really wanted it, so I finally let him talk me into selling it for $700. He still has it, it still runs like a top a year later but now it has triple 40's, 16" wheels and it's about to ingest a 5-speed OD.

    Greetings! My wife and I are curious as to the value of our E3. It has a beefed up four speed. The motor was built, balanced and blue-printed. it is safe to say that this first year injected powerplant has less than 40,000 miles, although the odometer has been sticking. The electric sunroof is functional, but the air conditioner condenser unit leaks refrigerant. The leather interior is pristine, the dash has only a very small crack. The radio/tape is Blaupunk. Power windows. The weather stipping has been shrinking, causing a minor leak into the cabin floorboard area. The paint is a gunmetal gray, with only two very small rust pockets, near the chrome trim. No dings.
    While borrowing our car on a trip to San Francisco, a friend was offered $5000 on the spot four years ago. What about now?
