It looks like it may be, but JB's people ...

are saying that essentially BAR snoozed and loozed.
Apparently there was a deadline for BAR to exercise their option for JB in 2005 and it passed.

Williams: BAR Missed Option Deadline on Button

Thursday August 5th, 2004

BAR had an option on Jenson Button for 2005 but the deadline for this option had expired, Frank Williams stated tonight, in an interview with BBC Radio.

Williams made a surprise announcement tonight, stating Briton Button will re-join the team next season, to drive alongside Australian Mark Webber. However, Button's current employer, BAR-Honda team chief David Richards threatened with legal action to block the move, stating Button has a binding contract with BAR.

"[Button] has been under option to his present team BAR for some time," Williams told the BBC. "The option expired recently and Button's management called us to say that the option was no longer valid and would we be interested in his services - and of course I reacted as you might expect me to.

"I think [BAR] probably wanted to take up the option but whether they've executed or not will come out in due course."

Williams was asked why he believes Button wished to make a return to Williams, after apparently being successful and supported in his existing team. Williams said he did not know Button's reasons, but speculated that Button might have wanted to make a return ever since leaving the Grove-based outfit.

"He started with us in 2000 and we've been in very close contact all of the time since," Williams said. "Maybe he just harboured a wish [to make a return] and recognised we had spent tens of millions of pounds reinvesting in the company technically speaking.

"Maybe he recognises we have a greater opportunity of providing him a World Championship car than his present team.

"I haven't asked him the real answer yet."

Great!! MW & JB will be an awesome combo but.....

Whats this news about BAR saying they still have JB for 2005? Could this become a legal tussle in the next few days? Yikes!

I just read about it on BBC....

Its certainly a promising combo for the Williams BMW effort for 2005. I only hope the team Jenson is going to can get their cars sorted for him by next season or he won't be enjoying the kind of success he's had this year.

If I were in Jenson's shoes, I probably would've stayed with BAR. They definately have a great package going for them this season.

I'll add a WHOOO HOOO to that ...

Two very promising drivers for next season.
Now if they'll dump that ugly assed (or nosed as the case is) car things could be looking very rosy.

Jenson Button (confirmed here ...)

Atlas F1 reports:
Button Returns to Williams Next Year

Thursday August 5th, 2004

British driver Jenson Button is to join Williams for next season, the Formula One team said tonight.

The 24-year-old will leave his present team BAR at the end of 2004. He currently lies third in the drivers' championship with 61 points this season.

Button made his Formula One debut with Williams, in the 2000 season. He was replaced by Juan Pablo Montoya the following year and, after two seasons with Benetton/Renault, the young Briton moved to BAR-Honda.

The announcement comes as a surprise, as Button has a long-term contract with BAR. However, the rising star has been considered Frank Williams's choice, the team owner frequently speaking highly of Button.

BAR have yet to issue a statement, and it now remains unclear who will drive for the team next year. The Brakly based outfit has an option on Button's teammate, Japanese Takuma Sato.

Button will pair Australian Mark Webber, who signed a long term deal with Williams last week. The two drivers have worked together in Benetton/Renault, when Webber was the team's test driver in 2001.

Last week, during a promotional tour of South Africa, Button told reporters he rates Webber as the biggest future threat to the World Championshio, speaking highly of the Australian's commitment.

Jeff Gordon

I don't believe that of course, but seriously, they could do a lot worse and from the looks of who is available, they're not likely to do any better.

Heifeld? DC? JV? Give me a break! DC hasn't done squat the past couple years (Melbourne 2003 was luck) and NH has never done squat. JV's big mouth, bad attitude, and (yes) poor performance in the last years killed any chance of him coming back. What have any of them done recently to merit one of the top 8 seats in F1?

Williams has been seriously out manuevered in the driver game.

with all respect, heidfeld has the experience but.

he does not have any experience winning or maintaining a winning pace. You're right about the car he's using, it is in desperate need of current standards. I think with the performances he's given there seems to be alot of lackluster technique in regards to overtaking, deep braking, and finding the right line around a track. And if memory serves me correct he's never been a top runner, always at the back. For crying out loud Derek Daily drove thier team car and was somthing like 2 seconds from Heidefeld in a car Daly has never been in. You put KR or JPM in that car, imo heidfeld would get embarassed. I would have to choose Coulthard over Heidfeld because DC is a points getter. He may not be the best guy out there but, he's very consistant. IMO he is the best bet for securing a constuctor's championship and I know sir Frank is thinking about that one. It's fun to spectulate whom they will choose but, in the end they know a hell of a lot more about it all than we do. I honestly do not care which driver they choose, just as long as there's a BMW in the winner's circle.

how? just no opportunity in a good car. the jordan

is, imo, worse than the minardi this year. the jordan is a new car with new engine and it still fights with the minardi. the minardi is using a 3 year old engine not meant for a whole weekends use. they have the smallest budget, the oldest chassis, and they still keep ticking. eddie is right for selling the team to the arab's(whomever they are exactly i dont know) b/c maybe then they can use the money we pay them for oil to build up the team. pantano is a pretty ok driver, but heidfeld only got screwed over at mclaren and sauber b/c ron dennis fell in love with raikkonen for due reason. raikkonen, if given the right opportunity, can win a world championship. heidfeld, imo, will never win a championship but still has the ability to win races. he is a good driver and would have been a reasonable sub driver for mclaren if dc or mk got hurt when he was testing for mclaren. raikkonen has the talent but also was lucky to come in to f1 at the right time. i would bet that if both heidfeld and kimi came into sauber at the same time, it would have been a tougher decision for dennis to make. he has what it takes to race for williams and would make a great teammate for mark webber.

on the other hand, coulthard would also make a great teammate at williams, possibly a better teammate than heidfeld, but unfortunately and i hate saying this, but coulthard had his chance. if he still wants to race, let him go to jaguar or go to minardi. i would love to see him go to minardi. he would be great for the team with all the enthusiasm he has and the great team player that he is. he could also be bring much needed sponsorship to minardi. i still believe that if given the right opportunity, minardi could get much much better and become a top 5 team. they have so much heart.

it's a demo. so guess what the details are.
