    stupid.

why bother all that bs, just stop the car from knowing what speed it's doing, and it will never know how much milage it's getting. Now that is something illegal, you CAN do, and get a case for.

I don't think this will work

I doubt it will work without heroic efforts.

As I understand it, the instrument cluster communicates with the engine computer, both of which have milage numbers stored on them. If the engine computer suddently sees the instrument cluster reporting a lower milage, it will trigger an error code, and illuminate a dot (on some BMWs) on the odo, indicating tampering has taken place.

LEASING SUCKS and your BF has found out why. They intentionally give you fewer miles per year than a person will need. The AVERAGE American drives 15,000 miles a year. Getting a 10K a year lease is asking for trouble. What are you going to do? Stop driving?

The end of lease screw-job has cleaned out more than one sucker.

Of course, if you lease another new car, they may make allowances for you. Sounds good, right? Naw. The extra costs are just folded into the new lease.

Buying a brand new car is the most expensive way to own a car.

LEASING a brand new car is the most expensive way to buy a brand new car. And yes, you are effectively buying the car (and then selling it back at a pre-arranged price).

With the glut of SUVs on the market, expect BMW dealers to be less than kind with allowances when you turn in your car.

Buy a late model secondhand car with low miles. That is the best bargain. Unfortunately, the car you are turning in is not that car. For some reason, Dealers would rather hose you with turn-in fees and then dump the car at auction than just sell the car to you at a resonable price.

FWIW. I've had no car payments for nearly a decade now.

Re: Your boyfriend is a 'tard, and from the writin

"he bought two odometer on ebay, and he will use it then by the time he returns the car to the dealer, he will switch it back."

Please come back and post again to let us all know how it works out when he returns the car.

    Thanks!

Re: Urgent!! how to avoid digital odometer rollback?

Turn in the car, pay the over-mileage fee. Go buy a used Hyundai and live within your means.

    OH GEESH!

All this hassle. Turn the car in, pay the over mileage fee and next time DON'T LEASE. Go buy a used Honda and don't live beyond your means (that means, don't spend money you don't have)

I know one guy who was caught by BMWFS and ...

asked to buy out his car(740i). No prizon, its cheaper for BMWfs just to ask :), and you just deside yourself..... Its may be possible to do rollback only in case if you do not have Nav. system.

Ooooh... I'll take two of them! That way... +

... I could roll everything back to a negative number and drive around for months looking for 0000000 to come up. Would you accept a high quality color copy of a Canadian money order?

Oh yea -- I have one of those roll back things....

And.... uhhhh, I 'll sell it to your boyfriend for..... uhhh, $1500.00. Yea, $1500 should do it. Give me a few minutes to get a new Post Office box at one of those package stores and I'll get back to you. I'll ship it as soon as the money order gets here (yea, we only take money orders.)

I am a bmw technician, and this will not work!!!

the mileage is store in other computers, if he swaps the cluster it wont work first of all because the vin# does not match. the vin is programmed in when its replaced and cannot be changed. If the replacement cluster is installed, and it sees a miliage differance in the other computer it will set off a manipulation dot, which all dealers know about. It shows the mileage was tampered with. further more the mileage will still be recorded in the other computer, and when he puts the original cluster in it will just update the mileage. wasted time and money!! BMW THAUGHT OF THIS!!!!
