RA 1's...they wear well, good price too.

in this case, fitment is more important

I don't think you could go seriously wrong with RA-1s, SSRs or Michelin PSCs, for that matter. But I think you'll want more tire for your 540 than a 235 or 245, and a lower profile would also help. Do you already have wheels, or are you putting these on your Style 32s? '01 M5

    Toyo RA-1

Great tire for a beginner as it drives like a stickier street tire and very easy to drive at the limit.

    14 ton eh? .... as in ~14,000 kilos = ~30,000 lbs

Toyo RA-1 or Dunlop SSR if you can find those in your size.

Alright. I finally received the green light to purchace some R compounds for my 1999 540i / 6 for the remainder of this year's driving schools / events. The main one being Road America again in September.

Not much suspension work on the car. It has upgraded sway bars front and back, along with poly bushings. Will probably have new Koni Sports on before this event, as well. I think an "R" with a stiff sidewall would help immensely, wouldn't it?!? I'm also running the Hawk race pads to help slow the 14 ton monster down.

Can anyone recommend a good "first" R compound tire or two?!? I'll be running 235 or 245 17 inch. Haven't decided on which width yet. I also will be doing away with the staggered set-up the car has in it's current street form.

Thanks for any help you can give....
