You can not use that nav computer in your car.

You will need to get a MKI, MKII, MKIII, or MKIV nav computer for your car. The Japanese nav computers will only work in Japanese cars in Japan.

Here is a link to a navigation computer buyers guide. (Just delete the space in the URL to make it work.)

Can you post the nav computer part number?

What is the part number of the navigation computer you got. And, if you can post a picture, that might be even more helpful to determine what it is. Alpine did not manufacture the MKII, MKIII, and MKIV nav computers. Additionally, the MKII and MKIII are CD-based. The only DVD-based navigation computer for the E38 is the MKIV.

Also, what region is your car? BMW used a different navigation system for the Japanese market.

Assuming you have a US/Europe/Australia market E38, your car should have the TV module with a blue plug and a white plug. The MKII, MKIII, and MKIV navigation computer will have a blue plug and a burgundy (or sometimes yellow) plug. You will move the blue plug connected to your video module over to the the blue plug on the nav computer. (You will also have to add the burgundy plug, which is easy, and you will remove your old video module.)

If your nav computer does not have plugs that match those on the video module, then you may not have a MKII, MKIII, or MKIV nav computer.
