    Automobile ignition systems work

Here is how old automobile Ignition Systems Work... however, modern automobile are managed by an electronic system and many of the old components have been replaced with electronic or computerized devices which interconnected exchanging information to there operation, and any malfunctions will be transmitted to the the computer on board [OBD I or OBDII complaint].

Indeed, there is humor at best because most of us benevolent E38 owner's whenever our E38 do not start we hit the panic switch and run like chickens without heads trying to figure out what's wrong... but merely understand how everything works in our cars. BTW, while back posted how the "cops system" works, and have you been messing with the secondary throttle cable... it will disable the engine in spite engine cranks, too.

Claudio, where do you get this stuff? I understand the disclaimer, but I hope there was some humor hidden in there too or else I'll have to worry about you sitting somewhere in the mountains with a tin-foil hat hiding from the black helicopters.

Back on topic, fuel supply is not being cut, spark is... ??? But I'm still guessing CPS as well as you. And if I am wrong, my attorney will be contacting you, LOL!!!!!

Once again... CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - monitors the rotation of the camshaft so the computer knows precisely when to trigger the ignition spark or the fuel injectors. [This is the reason as to why car will not start if there is CPS failure]. If no signal is present, shuts off fuel supply after four seconds. Generic DTC: P0340-Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction.

Fix it yourself [DIY]... disclaimer: I'm telling you not to fix it yourself, take it to the dealer and pay for them to do, I have fixed
mine successfully, I know of one other guy who did too, using this instructions. I'm serious you could bend the cam interrupter flange or worse, only do this if you're sure and then still don't do it. I'm not responsible at all, ask anyone who knows me, if you follow this you're as crazy as I am... Sorry about this but I live in America and here they sue for their own stupidity so I'm being cautious here, I want to save you money, but I don't want to lose mine 8-)....

    Few additional details about:

These factors may affect a magnet's strength:

Heat [M62 or M60 get very hot]

Strong electrical currents in close proximity to the magnet

Other magnets in close proximity to the magnet

Neo magnets will corrode in high humidity environments unless they have a protective coating. :-)

Shock and vibration do not affect modern magnet materials, unless sufficient to physically damage the material.

There are 2 types of magnets: permanent magnets and electro-magnets.

Permanent magnets emit a magnetic field without the need for any external source of power. Electro-magnets require electricity in order to behave as a magnet... resistance is an ohms law's game.

Re: Peake shows no faults, but still won't start!?

Most likely the problem may be the CPS [cam position sensor]... the car is totally disable with a bad CPS, and very few code readers will provide the code unless the engine stop while running... if not, there will be no codes.

An Indy who has an AutoLogic system can also check

the car cheaper than a dealer.

What does the car do now... Click, turnover, nothing? Have you replaces the battery? Have you tried starting in neutral instead of park?

You are nearing the point where you need BMW diag.

You are probably at the point where you need to hook your car up to a BMW diagnostics computer. That will most likely tell you exactly what is wrong. Unfortunately, that will probably entail a trip to a BMW dealer or a specialized BMW mechanic who owns one of their systems.

Another option is to check over on the www.bimmer E38 forum (delete the space from the URL). There are a bunch more highly active and expert people there. I am one of the few remaining active people here, and my knowledge taps out pretty early. Someone there may have a clue for you. Additionally, you might find someone there who lives nearby and has access to a BMW diagnostics system. There are a number of folks who have setup systems on a laptop.

Peake shows no faults, but still won't start!?

Well, it's been a few weeks now and my car still will not start. After finally getting the right code reader I plugged it in only to see "--". How can nothing be wrong with my car if it will not start?

I'm totally clueless here, and am very afraid of what they Dealer may want ot fix this.

I know she's getting gas, all fuses look good (although 57 or 58 was blown and now replaced).

    Any ideas out there?
