    Crankcase ventilation odor

One other minor issue I am having with my car (2001 3.0 M54) is a somewhat persistant odor of crankcase ventilation in the cockpit...hot oil odor like you get when you remove the oil filler cap. Turning the HVAC system to recirculate seems to have no effect. My first guess is the oil separator unit or one of its associated hoses has a crack and is leaking crankcase fumes into the engine bay, which are finding their way into the cockpit somehow. No Check Engine light is evident. I get no oil usage or evidence of leakage, which makes me think its the crankcase vent system.
Anyone else had a similar problem?Cheers,
    Paul Kile
