    They might be short...

... definitely worth the try, but in case you need something longer the coil is also a place to borrow them from

    To expand upon this trick...

Zeta mentions the two holes on the water pump that are threaded -- the four bolts that hold the pulley onto the water pump are also the correct size for threading into the water pump ears for removal.

This way you don't have to mess with the coils, especially since you will have to remove the pulley bolts anyway to replace the water pump.

The BMW 6-cyl water pump swap is pretty straightforward & really easy to do compared to most vehicles. Oh, and like Zeta says, go with the EMP Stewart pump. It costs more, but it is built like a brick sh*thouse.

Bicycle Shop will have the 32 mm wrench

It's a common size for handlebars or some such thing, I got one that is nice and thin. Like others have said, you don't really need a special tool to hold the fan, I used a big flat blade screwdriver between a couple of the bolts on the fan pulley. Remember that the fan is reverse threaded, turn the opposite way to loosen the fan.

They are available on eBay for cheap

Also a little trick: after removing the 4 nuts holding the WP in place notice the 2 holes in the WP housing at 3 and 9 o'clock. They are threaded. To simplify the removal take two bolts and use them to push out the pump. If you don't have them handy, take two of the bolts holding a spark plug coil in place.
I personally don't mess with the BMW pump anymore: the the EMP Steward (oembimmerparts has the best price)... That's what my 2.8 had and now the X3 and soon the Z4...

Tool to remove the fan clutch ..

I just got a flat piece of steel about 3' long by two inches wide from Home Depot and then drilled two holes in it to fit over the small screws on the fan clutch. I had to ground a half-moon cut between the two holes to fit around the shaft. If you have a grinder and a drill, you can make this tool in about an hour.

    I like this wrench

Fan nut and Oil Filter wrench

don't have the holder, I just use a large screw driver, sometimes a good quick wack will loosen the nut.

Anyone have the 2 Water Pump tools for sale?

Yes - it failed at 62k - should have been proactive and done it sooner. Thankfully I was pulling into a parking lot as it happened. Only broke the fan shroud . . will know about fan after I get it out. Never done a water pump on this vehicle, so hope goes well for an old hobbiest.

But it appears I need that flat 32mm wrench and the special tool to hold the shaft while I remove the fan clutch nut. Before I buy them new, does anyone have either/both of these they would liket to sell?
    I have a M52 engine (2000 Z3 2.5) and am in Central Texas. Thanks!

PS - odd thing is this happened within a week of my buying a "replacement" car for the Z, although I wasn't ready to sell it after 11 years of terrific service. Do you think it got made at me??
