Thanks to all for helping out with the dipstick question. All is good on my 325i!

Before adding any oil

Before adding any oil when you see the dip stick show it is low, clean off the dip stick again and redo, to check again. Just be double sure of yourself before adding oil to prevent adding too much. ALso, when putting the dip stick in to measure, be careful that you are putting it in all the way--there is a washer near the handle that unless you are careful, may result in the dip stick being 1/2 inch high, and therefore mislead you as to the true level.
Lastly, I would only add half a quart at a time and re-measure, until you do this a few times--just to make sure you did not somehow make a mistake in reading it. It most likely will take at least 1 1/2 quarts but care needs to be applied not to over fill.

i repeat:

check the oil only when the car is hot after driving,
let it sit for 5-min on level ground after shutting
OFF, parked on level ground. If you need oil
add only MOBIL 1 0w/40 , or BMW Synthetic 5w/30 oil.

red plastic level reading area with 2 ball marking
low and FULL level

you need to clean off the red area very well,
stick the stick in fully, hold for 3 seconds,
pull it out and read holding the stick level,
hard to see the top line of dirty oil
against the red plastic - I know - need lots of
light and good eyes

if there is NO OIL reading on the stick?
you'll need a MIN. of 2-quarts to start with!

Hey I did get the dipstick out. But, how do you read the markings on it???? I have the owners manual, but the picture has a different dipstick marking.
