Looking for A Little Help (longish)
I'm e39 540i owner and I'm wondering about the m5 shocks/struts. I know this isn't the right forum, but I thought someone over here might be able to help.
I need new shock and struts, because of a strut recall on my car, and want to lower my car. Would the m5 setup work?, I wouldn't be using the m5 springs, I want to use either eibach or H+R. People on my forum seem to think it will actually raise the car, since the m5 is heavier, but since I'm not going to use the stock springs, wouldn't that not be a problem? Any help would be awesome. "M5 springs and struts will raise a 540 because the M5 is 250lbs heavier ..." apparently, one or possibly two people tried the swap, posted about the raised height, and this became gospel for every 540 owner. in truth, the weight difference between a late model, fully optioned 540 and an M5 is not that great. but you still don't want to do the swap. the OEM Boge struts/shocks found on the M5 are not well regarded; Koni and Bilstein are thought to make far superior products. and when you start mixing different shock/spring combinations on your own, the results will be hard to predict. it's been a while and I don't really remember, but I think the Koni/Eibach package was a good one, and I'd look into doing that; the H&Rs might be a bit harsh, IIRC.
