Battery idiot light is on with key out / car off
Well this is a new one on me... getting out of the car and notice the red battery light is still lit on the dash. Is this a "normal" indication of something wrong (or an abnormal one;-)
Any help is appreciated. It has been on for at least an hour now
That is an indication of bad diodes in the
rectifier circuit in the alternator. Id start checking around for a rebuilt alternator.

How long do you think I have? I'm supposed to leave on a 1000+ mile round trip on Thursday... driving the M5 of course ;-)
Steve H -- Can you send one ASAP?
I wouldn't head out on a 1000 mile trip with your
current alternator. I'd replace it before you leave. Most any auto electrical shop should be able to get you a rebuilt in a couple of days.

Any real differences in manufacturers of these rebuilt units? I don't even know what is in our cars but I assume a Bosch unit.
Will ANY unit I find work just fine or should I REALLY stick to a BMW brand name? Advanced Auto Parts has one made by Worldwide but they said it was an exact fit.
I would look at the tag on the alternator in your
car and ask for the exact same part number as a replacement. I don't have any knowledge of the rebuilders, just get one with a national warranty.
