Oil Leaking on the Car

sometimes smells really bad and the other day when I
pulled up to Jiffy Lube it was smoking by the wheel on the drivers front side,
but it doesnt smoke all the time, that was the first time I'd see that, it
usually smells but I cannot figure out what it is, so then the guy at Jiffy Lube
looked at it and told me my oil was leaking onto my exhaust and that he cleaned
it up. (I know that is only temporary, they cannot fix this problem there) So, I
am not sure what is...anyone know what it is? Or how bad of a problem it is?

what is the valve cover gasket? How long would this take to fix? Is it hard to do?

opps, i ment to respond to this one, I do not know what the valve cover gasket is...how long would this take? Is it something I can read only to do?

Happens someone on the E46 board just did theirs (it's almost identical to E90 ones). Check out the pictures in the link

There is a fair bit of dis-assembly - pretty much everything you see at the top of the motor, including parts of the ignition and vacuum tubing. Doable, but probably not the best job to start with.

and I wouldn't go tearing the engine apart until

you're absolutely sure where the leak is. A thorough visual inspection will usually turn up the problem

Okay, thanks! From reading all of these I am pretty sure I am going to take it to someone because I might screw it up myself : ) but I will make sure we know what it is before I do anything...
