Well, I've got an S52 (no issues - hydraulic).
But, with the S54's solid lifters...
If the clearances are too wide, there can be noise - you know, clickety-clack, somewhat irregularly if they're not all even. Possibly somewhat reduced power at high rpms. Possibly higher wear on components.
As for too tight clearances, I just rebuilt the head on my e30 and did the old eccentric-cam rocker adjustments.
Symptoms there were a *very* irregular idle and *no* valve tapping noises. Valves were too tight from the machine shop (<.008"). Adjusted to .012 all around and idle is now butter smooth.
