So our '96 Z3 four with 138,000 miles is in the Hans Hospital for a front timing cover reseal, original quote $1,350 as it's buried in the front, I'm told. Upon further inspection the radiator is bad and the water pump is frozen in. More dough.......
I trust my mechanic, does this sound about right?
Not out of line price wise.

I have replaced the inner timing case cover on an M42 engine, it is a very time consuming job. Have to remove the head. The price seems to be in line for all of that work.
the front timing cover need to be resealed? Is there motor oil in there?

Yes there is oil in there to lub the timing chain.

Is the timing chain oil part of the engine oil system, so that when you change the engine oil you're also changing the oil that lubes the timing chain, or does it have its own special oil/system?

The price is about right I was quoted about the same by my BMW independent specialist for my 98 Z3 1.9. The repair is costly because so many other parts need to be removed and if they are old may as well be repalced (like the water pump).
My question is whether it is worth having the repair done. In my case I decided not to. The leak I was experiencing was very small, literally a drop per month. Since my car is a summer driver and I only put about 3,000 miles a year on my specialist suggested not having the work done. I taped some card to my garage floor to montior the leak and check the oil level regularly. So far no problems.
I guess it all depends on the extent of the leak. If it was serious it would be another story.
I thought my place was good, Hans Foreign Car Service in San Diego, but now I'm even more convinced. Upon teardown the radiator could be seen to be leaking and the waterpump was frozen in place so $1,807 with a new radiator and water pump. Thanks again to Mike and Mike at Hans in San Diego
