No Reverse in 4.4 Sour Transmission.
I and a mutual friend of a friend have both lost our reverse gear in the past month, with 60-64K miles on both of our vehicles. 2001 4.4's BMW will only replace a transmission, not service or tear it down. I took mine to a shop and found out that after a very extensive tear-down, that I need new clutch, seals, (drum should be replaced) and fluid. The exact remedy was perscribed to my mutual friend at a different shop. BMW at lease offered him $3000 Good Will Money for a new transmission, but my dealership did not. I wanted to know if anyone had any advice of how I can get some money back, who to call, (please leave names & number) ect..ect.. Is this almost a general recall problem that they do not want to disclose to the public? Thanks Donnie in Pittsburgh

Re: No Reverse in 4.4 Sour Transmission.
I too have experienced loss of reverse and find from talking with transmission shop and rebulding company that this is a common problem. I have 100,000 miles on this X5 but am contemplating how many miles I have gone in reverse!. I am a lawyer and will pursue this with BMW corporate.

You ought to check out consumer affairs website. There are plenty of postings about this same problem.

I've just been told my transmission needs to be replaced in my '03 X5 4.6. Didn't have a problem with reverse, just started getting a bad sound from my engine and poof I need a new trans!
