    17" rims?

Is there a modern 17" rim that fills the bill for our beloved E9s?
    12mm offset in the front?

You can find 17's that will fit, although fitment is tight on the front. 3 piece BBS wheels are a good option because you can buy the offset you need (not cheap, but good wheels never are).

However, in the big picture 17" wheels are not a great idea. The car was designed for 14" wheels and 70 series tires. Big wheels are heavy, the 45 series tires you'll need have next to no sidewall deflection. This will place significant additional stress on the front and rear shock towers. The rears in particular are prone to cracking. People who run 16" Alpina or BBS wheels with 50 series tires have found this to be a risk, and 17's will make it even more likely.

    I wouldn't go bigger than 16's.
