Hood won't open...help!

Hi all...hoping someone can help.

The hood on my '88 528e won't open. The cable does not appear to be broken and still has tension. But it will not release the intial hold on the hood in order to reach under from the front and finish the release.

I believe there is a latch on either side that can be reached with a long screwdriver from the front of the grill. I have read that I will need to take the front grill off. My question (if this is the proper procedure)...how do you get the grill off without breaking it when the hood won't go up? It feels like there is a lip on the top that won't release with the hood down. Is there a trick to this?
