Any update on the Quaife LSD situation/buy?

While at the track last week, I saw no glaring need for the LSD, as the car seems so perfectly balanced (thanks Grease Monkey for the details). Certainly, at my novice speeds, I was probably well within the normal diff safety envelope.

On public roads however, there seems to be more of a need for the LSD. This could be do to many factors such as road materials, oil, gravel. Don't get me wrong, the car is still amazingly surefooted. It just seems a little less so than under the ideal conditions of the track.

Anyway, I'm interested in any quality LSD solution, and I'm curious to know if anyone has an update on the Quaife or an alternative.

I can start a group buy thread over on my site if

    there is enough interest.

I understand there are a few different LSD's on the market, and I know some owners are investigating these options, but the most tried and tested LSD is the Quiafe. Brett Anderson has supplied several owners with a set of units he ordered, but they are all taken now. These British made LSD's are now extreemly expensive with the exchange rate being so bad, so a bulk order is the only way to to get a good price on them.

Let me know if there is any interest in a group buy, and I'll try to get a good reveiw of the options available to us.

    Sounds good

Origianlly, I was going to post a reply to the existing thread on your site, but there seems to be more activity here. I typically find your site to be a quick reference to historical data, issues, evemts, mods, etc., where Roadfly seems to have more day-to-day traffic for questions, etc. Both are useful.

I'm open to any alternative to the Quaife. It certainly looks like a quaility LSD, but there should be some state-side options that are as good. I'm surprised that Dinan doesn't have something. Such is the downside to a limited production vehicle.

    Re: Drexler Info

    Hello.

I hope this goes through, as Roadfly has banned me for not paying my dues.

    A few misconceptions.

The current wait list for Quaife is at 5, but we need 15 (not 10 as suggested in this thread).
Deposit is not $3000, it's $2000, balance due 4-5 weeks before delivery to you.
Drexler unit is ~$4040 with LSD and 3.64 gears. Don't forget international shipping, via UPS (which is Drexler's shipper of choice) at close to $400 for a 100lb package. And core?

Our clutch based LSD is ready to ship, allowing for current production delays of 2-3 weeks.
The clutch LSD (Salisbury style) does wear. We set it at about 40%, and in about ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND MILES, it MIGHT need to be freshened up, at a current cost of $500. The Quaife won't need this refresh, but.....

Hope this helps. Call me if you have questions. 440 564 7574

    Brett Anderson

The Quaife is worth every penny IMHO

I would urge you to get an economic order together and get Brett to build them for you. See GM's original comments about this great upgrade. I also recommend the 3.64:1 ratio change..

Yep, yep, yep... Brett's the Best, just ask GM

I have had nothing but positive experiences with Brett myself and followed Grease Monkey's suggestion in getting the Quaife. I am VERY glad I did..

I'll start the GROUP BUY thread once we have....

the full results of Z8Doc's investigations, just in case anyone was wondering why I hadn't done anything about i yet.

There are several units on the market, and they all vary in build, fitment, cost, warranty, and they can all be obtained through a variety of vendors, so once we have the info I'll do a poll to see who wants what from where.

I have an LSD, but haven't got around to fitting it yet, so have no direct input on this mod, but everyone who has one is extatic about it, so it's obviously a really worthwhile upgrade.

    UPDATE: Talked to Brett

After our great weekend at the TMSR, I'm set on making some critical upgrades to better suit the occasional track outing. As such, a LSD is high on the list.

I called Brett this morning, and he says he's four to six weeks away from shipping a replacement for the Quaife. Unlike the Quaife, the new unit will be clutch based. It will be variable and uses three disks. Price will be $4,250 for the unit with 3.64 gears. I believe retaining the stock ratio will be $1,400 less.

I put my name on the list, and it sounds like there are several in front of me. So, this may not be news to some, but worth reporting anyway.

I'll leave to the experts, but...

to my knowledge, BMW traditionally uses clutch-based LSDs versus the gear-based (???) Quaife. So the new unit will funtion similar to the LSD in the E39 M5, but it's likely a more robust unit.

Brett said the performance of the new unit and the Quaife are comparable except that the new unit will do a 100% transfer. Apparently the Quaife design requires some level of traction at both wheels. This should only come into play when one wheel has traction and the other has none (as in ice).
