what's a good price range for a 2002 black/black with 9k miles? It's a new orleans car which was NOT flooded.

    $100K ...

I recently (2 months ago) purchased a 2002 certified BMW pre-owned, with 8,500 miles here in southern CA. The car is under waranty for another 3 years.

My car was super clean. Absolutely nothing short of showroom condition.

I also had the chance to spend a lot of time with the original owner of the car, learning everything there is about it.

    Carfax was clean too.

    Hope this helps.

The full story (a bit long)

My forcing function: buy the best car I can find, not the best price.

    Here it goes ...

My car was for sale by owner for $98,900 on ebay. I contacted the owner and started the Q/A phase. The owner was selling the car because in anticipation of his incoming M5.

I was ok with his asking price but wanted the warranty for peace of mind. That's how the dealer (Rusnak) got involved. Rusnak agreed to provide the extended warranty (official BMW pre-owned certification) as well as handling of the paperwork for $2K, which I agreed to pay. Rusnak was also doing this in part as a favor for the seller, who was one of their clients. (My Z8 was originally purchased at Rusnak, too.)

    The real winner...

For the condition you describe and a CPO, you got a great price. I'm convinced that eBay is the best source finding a good price on Z8s (assuming you do your homework). That's how I "stole" mine.

However, the real winner was the seller as he got to run the car through the dealer as an "in-and-out" trade on his M5. As such, he'll be paying no tax on the new M5 by trading a $98k car on a ~$90k one. I don't know what the vehicle sales tax is in your area, but in Texas, he would have kept ~$5,625 in his pocket.

Again, you got a great deal, but you did the guy a big favor. The least he could do was pony up for the CPO and dealer paperwork cost. Call the guy and demand a case of your favorite beer!

Then again, you got the better car!

Hmmmm, didn't think of that ...

but, let that be his reward for taking such good care of my car and, not to mention, covering about 30+K of depreciation :)

    Rusnak where?

I've tried to think of a way to get a dealer to CPO my car. Sell to them under contract to buy back at the same price, plus the cost of the CPO, but the $8,500 sales tax would kill the deal.

    Any Ideas?

    Thousand Oaks, CA ...

Can you sell/buyback the car for $1.

I can't imagine there being a law against selling cheap.

If you buy the extended warranty...

That is essentially the same thing as CPO. They will not sell you the warranty without inspecting the car first, and correcting any defects. You then end up with the 6 year/100,000 mile limited warranty..
