    but...BigD

In all fairness to these M5 owners - they are using a 7 speed SMG 3rd generation as to your M3's 6 speed 2nd generation. I have heard that there are big differences...

It's funny. I have a client who calls me bigD

    sorry, I have to vent...(long)

I had an S class before my 740i sport. Comfort and performance will always be at odds. A benz is a powerful and fast luxury car whereas BMWs are luxurious performance cars (compare suspensions and seat designs for proof). The two companies start at opposite ends of the spectrum and are getting closer and closer to the middle. This is a problem!! I don't want a benzed up BMW like the new mega cruiser E65 7 with a Lincoln Towncar dashboard and a hydraulic suspension device that allows for a soft ride in a straight line and stiffens up ONLY in a corner - notice the new M5 doesn't use this technology whereas the 550i does. Nor am I interested in a Bimmered out Mercedes like the 4 door coupe CLS - a schizophrenic car that isn't as quick as a 550i nor as good in a corner, yet looks like a bullet and is smaller inside than an E class. WTF? Forget this cross polination. BMW group surpassed Mercedes worldwide sales years ago and ever since then Mercs have gotten lower profile tires etc... and nearly every model can be AMG equipped...G55, and the new minivan with 460hp? Come on! They are trying to lure customers like you! Power alone doesn't make a car great. The feel of the car is the most important thing, power being one of the factors contributing to feel. Mercedes needs to return to ultra reliable safely styled cars and BMW needs to focus on what made them famous - injecting soul into cars by pushing the performance envelope as far as practicality allows and forget about making BMWs bigger and ride softer without sacrificing the "performance" as it appears on a car magazine data sheet.

You had to know all of this BEFORE buying ....(M)

Poor gas mileage and small tank... things you knew (or should have known). It comes with SMG.... it was not a surprise to you.
If you simply want a car that goes from point A to point B then ........WHY DIDN'T YOU BUY A REGULAR CAR?!?!?!
You bought a highly tuned performance car and you complain about the things that make it .... A HIGHLY TUNED PERFORMANCE CAR.
I highly doubt that anyone here is going to feel bad for you. More likely they just think you are a fool.

Re: You can click the paddle several times and jump

Right. In around town driving, I find it's best not to downshift the SMG. It's rough, and unnecessary. The tranny will shift itself during braking. If you're on the hwy, in 7th gear, and want to downshift to 4th, you can do it immediately with 3 quick blips of the paddles or stick. The tranny does a 7-4 downshift if you blip quickly.

I do agree that even SMG III is not optimum for shuttling around town. It takes much more concentration, and is not as smooth as an automatic. With 7 gears, you are shifting quite a bit also.

For hard driving, with this particular car, I would chose the SMG though. A manual would not give you the optimum ratios, and you would be shifting a lot to keep the rev's up.

The ultimate solution will be a DSG type transmission. Smooth at low speeds, and ultra-quick in hard driving.

    Re: Maybe and maybe not

I think it's unfair to beat down a fallow BMW fan on a new car that no one really has any experience with here in the USA.

Keep in mind that most M5 owners bought their car site unseen and no test drive of course. It's one thing to read about it in the mag. and all, it's another to experience it in person.

Sure, about the small fuel tank and poor gas mileage issue. Yes, the gas mileage is low. It's printed right on the window sticker. But than again, did anyone really know what the winder sticker said BEFORE the car came in? I don't think so. About the small gas tank. Well, heck, when was the last time anyone check the size of the gas tank on their cars?

What I am trying to say is, hindsight is always 20/20. It's another story when people are put in the position to buy the car without some real world experience. The M5 is a great car, just not for everyone.

We all should be glad that there are owners like this who are willing to share their thoughts...good or bad. It's just one's opinion, nothing more.

Hey jal...your opinion on SMG residuals please...

Do you think a healthy number of owners feel will or do feel the same as you about the SMG? If so, the 1st year SMG M5s might befall the same fate as the first year E65 7s...a CPO buyer's delight, n'est pas?

He knew what the E60 5 series looked like ...(M)

if he did not like the look of that then he will not like the E60 M5. Also, you can get the gas mileage and fuel tank size from the journals, BMW, and other sources BEFORE buying. And yes... if I am buying a V10 that gets around 12mpg then I am going to want to know the size of the gas tank.
I do not feel bad for people who have money and throw it around carelessly. He should have done better research. Would you buy a house without knowing every detail? Probably not. I certainly would NOT buy a depreciating objest without thorough investigation.
BOO HOO.... he can go cry elsewhere.
