Come on you are all just bashing a great car
You people astonish me at your remarks on this vehicle. I work for BMW as a tech, not even a potential owner and i love the car. So far i cannot belive that customers are talking this way of such an advanced automobile. You know if you want a cheap sports car go out and buy a corvette. Christ the M5 is an M5, a crazy driving experience for both the driver and any passengers that might be along. BMW didn't design this car to be an everyday city driver, although we are selling snow tire packages? it is a sports car of an unpresidented level, just because all of this new technology is surrounding us don't go out and say that the smg is garbage and dosn't shift to your liking, that is ludachrist the M5 is only sold with the SMG and the 6 speed is only talk not even on the market as of yet. I have driven the new M5 and the old M5 and the even older M5 and you know what being an electronics expert on these cars I can only say one thing. YOU are all underestimating this car, JUST toady for instance i had one come in on the hook with 900km on it and the customer claimed that it's oild had pumped out all over the freeway and it was bone dry and was totally worked up over the purchase. Only for me to find on page 182-183 of his owners manual that the car was down 1Ltr of oil and there was nothing otherwise wrong with the car. Education is key with these cars. People just seem to buy it into it for the Name when all that is just fine but gosh DO SOME RESEARCH PRIOR TO COMMITING if this vehicle doesn"T soot your needs then just enjoy the look whenever you pass one on the street (OR ONE PASSES YOU) but don't bash one of the leading edge cars on the market for reasones that are fact. THE CAR IS FAST AND HANDLES GREAT SO COME ON IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT STAY AWAY DON'T ruin and bash the car for it being great. City driving was not what this car was designed for and i'm sure you all could agree. This is a savage beast that deserves the roads it was designed for, Autobahns and open winding and unpopulated roads!!!

Re: M5 has been a mistake for Me
I am desperately trying to maintain an open mind on the M5's SMG. However, I have been piling up information on the M5 since it was released in Europe. Guess what? I happened to have saved the Tivoed episode of MotorTrend test drive of the M5. I remember discussing with my IT buddy the way it set the skull of the female test driver. I commented on how the car jerked her head toward the headrest each shift and I added that the 360 Stradale did it a more docile way and I got ridiculed to the max. I was told that I was ignorant.
This morning my wife were in a BMW dealer and came in really, really close to driving off on a M5. The color I wanted wasn't available and the salesperson was asking for a 5k markup. I held off on buying one until I read more about the car not mentioning researching the price.
It is people like you that keeps forums like this alive. You may be a poseur but I can certainly take input from all over, on every response to the thread you started. I became more informed and happy to take, deduct from all responses and be able to make an intelligent decision.
By the way, when I test drove the M today, the car will not start and shift down from neutral to 1st if the door was closed. The engine really sounded funny when it did but eventually settled down after a minute.
Did you have the same experience? I am starting to think about waiting for the second iteration of the E90. I want to make the best decision since this will be my first BMW coming from an STI. It will be a huge jump so I want to make sure I land perfectly.
Thanks for the post.

just picked up my 2007 550i
with SMG. I driven sticks and many many automatic, i have to say that i am learning how to drive all over again. the SMG does jerk during shifing as i am learning. the reason that i went with SMG is that i live in the Rocky Mountains, small town. never have to worry about traffic jams. taking the car out in the twisty mountains is awesome. Verdict on SMG... still out, will post opinion later
