How common are Vanos probs on 2001?

Want a companion for my M6. You folks previously mentioned that
build date after June, 2001 minimized Vanos probs, but how common were the problems before that? Would they have been sorted out in car with
10-20K miles? I gather the fix runs in the $3K range - am I correct?

Mine was replaced at about 3000 miles- no trouble since then.

My 2001 Z-8 with 22,000 miles has had no issues. However, my 00 M-5(same motor as Z-8) needed the VANOS replaced at 50,000. It cost $1500 and now runs as strong as ever.

I had the service bulletin done that solves the cold-start clicking sound, but otherwise no problems on my early 2001 (now at 12000 miles).

Which part of the VANOS was replaced? That sounds awfully cheap for the whole system.

I don't know what parts they replaced. I'm not at home so I can't look at the invoice. I recall it was billed as a VANOS upgrade...my service tech told me that the "upgrade" basically replaced it with new. It's never run stronger.

The fix was called a new engine VANOS repair kit part 11-36-7-832-855 labor $945 parts $749.25

Do you know what it was or does? Is it just a simple check valve?

My service rep told me it was the same as getting a whole new VANOS. All I can tell you is the car runs like it did when it was new.
