Considering adding an ///M5 to the stable
Immaculate 2002 BMW M5, 103000 miles, black/black/walnut, Dinan differential and Stage 1 flywheel, UUC Evo III short-shifter, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, Dension IceLink+ iPod integration, all service records
I know the car (well kept), I know the owner (good guy), and I know the shop it regulars (great place). Although a bit high in the miles, the car is in excellent shape (I've driven it on a number of occasions)
What would be a reasonable price range for a car like this out in the wild?
Anything with these I should know about or look for (besides their appetite for oil)?

It'd likely be around $35K
but I don't know if/beleive there is any warranty left.
Of course I still have to find a way to determine if it suffers from any of the carbon buildup malidies. I'll need to find out what are the issues with vanos and clutch on these cars as well.<P><a href="http://www.bmw.com" target="_blank"><IMG SRC="http://www.z3bimmer.com/signature/sig_bmw.jpg" BORDER=0 ALT="BMW.com"></a><a href="http://www.z3bimmer.com" target="_blank"><IMG SRC="http://www.z3bimmer.com/signature/sig_z3.jpg" BORDER=0 ALT="Z3Bimmer.com"></a><a href="http://www.e24Bimmer.com" target="_blank"><IMG SRC="http://www.z3bimmer.com/signature/sig_6er.jpg" BORDER=0 ALT="E24Bimmer.com"></a><IMG SRC="http://www.z3bimmer.com/signature/sig_ult.jpg" BORDER=0 ALT="Just the Ultimate Driving Machines">

a little high
By comparison, you should be able to find a very nice '01, with half the mileage of that '02, in the high 30s. There are no significant differences between those two model years.
I suppose if your seller has done extensive repairs and preventive maintenance, and the car really is immaculate, 35k may look a little more reasonable. but personally, I would prefer to spend a little more and get something with far less mileage.
there's no original or CPO warranty after 100k miles.

The thought has crossed my mind
I'm considering it. There is a nice 02 here in town from a CCA member but it's not color I like much (Chiratto Red/Tan). I'll keep looking and considering. I missed an 03 CPO in Anathracite (or whatever it was called on the 03) at my dealer a few weeks ago. This one will be a daily driver if I get one. My truck is getting old and I'm bored with it...my SL is also old buy satisfies my need for a convertible. The only real downside to the M5 for me is how bad the factory sound system is :)
BTW: He's asking $53K :(

Re: The thought has crossed my mind
The Anthracite color was discontinued in 2000(?) I think and replaced with Sterling Grey.
Not sure where you are, but if that's the color you're interested in there's a 2003 Sterling Grey M5 available with solid black interior and 30,600 miles at Prestige BMW in Ramsey, NJ. The dealer is listing it for $56K.
Also, the lease is coming to an end on my 2003 Sterling Grey M5 in May. It also has the solid black interior and all the options, and will have between 29K and 30K miles. The residual is very low, so if you were interested in a non-CPO car you could get mine for around $49K. I attached a link where I explained the situation to another board member. Let me know if this is of interest to you.
Best of luck with your search.
