    Re: On o-rings and seals (long)

    I work in the O-ring/Seal Industry. I'm not a design engineer, but the Quality Supervisor for our warehouse facility. Mainly it's receiving inspection of outside vendors. I may be able to get samples of sizes and material if you guys need. I also work closely with our purchasing agent so I could probably find some sources also.

    Fuzzy math?

    V8 = four cylinders / cat
    I6 = six cylinders / cat

    OTOH, the cat on the I6 is probably larger than the one on the V8, so it's only an assumption about heat input and thermal mass without having hard data. If I had to put money on it, I'd guess that the cats are sized for the displacement they serve, so everything else equal, the lightup time is probably similar.

    Teflon question ?? (m)

    We use lots of o-ring in the equipment we manufacture. Most of them are silicon, viton, buna-n, sometimes kalrez and teflon.
    All of the teflon ones I've seen are white. The pics posted show black o-rings. Does it also come in black?
    The temps and compatibility that these various o-rings are good for can be found here.

    Oh puleeze.....

    BMW ignores the ABS controller, Radiator, radiator expansion tank, coil spring breakage, E36 rear subframe, fan clutch, etc, issues, has to be dragged screaming to the table over M3 engine failures, leaves a permenant bad taste over the M60B3/4 Nikasil issue......and you think a VANOS failure is unconscionable?

    Re: Teflon question ?? (m)

    Jim,

    Our transmissions have several teflon seals and they are all black. Funny since PTFE tape is white! Perhaps it's a filler or plasticizer that makes them black. Or maybe 'Teflon', the proprietary stuff, is always black?

    I believe we only need the springy support o-ring, since the teflon seal can be removed without damage. I mentioned earlier that I believed that teflon has a good memory, but I since read that it does not. My understanding of memory is that if the seal is deformed within its elastic region, it will return to its orignal shape/size. I think this is the case with the VANOS teflon rings and they can be removed with care and not exceed their elastic strain limit. If they are stretched beyond the limit, then they will not return to their original size, rendering them useless.

    Well, apparently it wasn't so stupid, looks like it sparked a discussion on a potential source of replace O-rings!

    how did they get the ring on to being with?

    they've got to have stretched it out to put it on, right?

    By hand?

    The best way to install an o-ring like this I've found is to do it by hand (even in production), that way it is stretched the least. If one side is in the groove, the other side has to be stretched a bit to get it into the groove. If you expand the o-ring over a cone, then you have to expand it to the diameter of the lip before the groove, which is not always desirable. Depends on the material of course, but Teflon doesn't like to be stretched beyond its elastic limit so by hand would be the way to go on this one.

    TR, no offense intended (more)

    I realize this is a serious discussion about a serious problem. I didn't mean to infer that you or anyone else are taking advantage of or channeling ad-click revenue, nor was I attempting to re-direct serious concerns to resolution of the issue away from your generous contribution and help in this matter. I should have given my post a little more thought as to a possible misinterpretation and negative inference. So I apologize to you for that and meant no harm, only thought more info is better. I'm sure your contribution on this specialty seals issue is second to none, and it's great to have someone outside of BMW engineering who actually knows something step up and help out. Thank you for that.

    You are correct, sir.

    A thousand apologies for premature typing. According to Bentley, the M52 engine has two cats mounted under the cabin, one for 1-3 and the other for 4-6. The M52TU and M54 moved the two cats under the hood, right on the exhaust manifold, again one each for 1-3 and 4-6.

    As for the V8s, the M62 has only two cats located under the cabin right in front of the resonator. The M62TU has four cats, one on each bank under the hood right on the manifold, and two more under the cabin in front of the resonator.

    Relocating the cats to the manifolds was solely for the purpose of fast light-up. It's clear from the layout of the exhaust that the older designs would cause more cold start emissions due to the remote location of the cats and the consequential reduction in exhaust gas temperature at startup as the pipes heat up.
