So far, no problem 2002 530i

So far, all is OK with the engine, but my 2002 530i only has 28,000 miles on the odometer.

    There shouldn't be

If all these posts say what I think they say, 02s (and 01s?) should not have this problem. The 02 is a different engine. I'm working from (addled) memory, so please be kind if I have it wrong, but I think I read that the problem is in the m52, and the 02 has an m54 engine.

    Performance is linked-for me

I noted a performace degradation after one year, long before the idle issue. I reported it to the dealer upon every visit to a reply of "runs good to me". I live southern california and it doesn't get very cold here. Maybe thats why I didn't get the idle problem years later (2000 528i, idle problem began in 2004). When the idle problem started it was something they couldn't ignore, but had no idea of how to fix it except for a complete software reinstall (see previous post). A performance increase was immediately noticable and the idle was gone. Well, for a month and now it's back. I took it to an independant, who was unaware of the issue and he reprogrammed the DME again but I did not get the same results and the idle problem is back along with degraded performance.

Please submit your resarch Re: BMW called

Please please submit your research to : http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/. There are so many people affected by this problem we can get thousands of people so sign petitions. I have a 2001 325 and had my Vanos replaced. I have LOW mileage vehicle and the Vanos was replaced at 25k miles. I now have 45k and the idle issues is slowly getting worse even in 70-80 degree weather.

I believe BMW knows about this problem since what do they do when you complain loud enough to BMWNA....replace the Vanos. Their alternatives are coil packs and idle control valves which the lead mechanic said rarely fixes the problem so they went straight for replacing my Vanos. SO what happens to all these people out of warranty especially those with stalling issues. THIS IS A NHTSA issue that is LONG overdue.

Also send a letter to Hans Duenzl who heads BMWNA. Hans G. Duenzl Vice President Aftersales & Engineering.

Re: 6-cyl double vanos problem assessment

Sorry to revive an old thread, but is VANOs a good enough reason not to buy an otherwise clean e39? I'm thinking so after reading all of your posts....4 days later

European M52TU Too. Thanks for the read.

Very interesting. Thanks for the research. Dealers here in the UK seem to think the double VANOS on the M52/M54 is bulletproof with no problems whatsoever.

    Little do they know, clearly.

My 2000 528i does exactly the same thing when idling during warm up. Done it since 30,000 miles.

    Stalled once, normally just hunts.

Re: Any 01 530i with same problem?

Not exactly the same problem, in terms of the warm up hunting.

However, the double VANOS unit is identical on the M54 engine, so the seals will degrade and there will likely be a slow but gradual decline in performance as the oil leaks past the seals and the VANOS is not moving as DME wants it to.

Sounds to me, like the VANOS unit is currently a service item. If you don't change it, your car will lose performance over time, so at 80,000 miles ish, for example, it will be down on power.

Rolling road day would be the best way to see, with several identical cars at increasing mileages.

Why not start a CLASS ACTION

I read from this thread that many people here have typically the same problem.

My question is, why not get a lawyer to start a CLASS ACT against BMW. At least they'll probably look into this problem more seriously after that.

Re: 6-cyl double vanos problem assessment

I am new to this site. Was thinking about aquiring a used 1998 523i.
I have 4 questions regarding this VANOS issue:

    1) Does this problem affect European built BMW's (same VANOS design?)

    2) Does this problem occur during summer temperatures as well?

    3) Were there double VANOS 523i's built in 1998 or is it definitely a single VANOS?

    4) Should I now re-think buying a BMW?

    Thanks for your help.

You should post a new message. Placing your qns

into an old post will not give it enough visibility for it to be answered. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the 523i engine so I do not know if it falls into the category of this vanos issue or not.

    Good luck,

BORING!!! No it isn't, it's useful

This is useful and important mechanical information compared to the endless adolescent dodo about "what degree of tint should I add to my windows?" or "what if I install 20" wheels, will they rub?" It is user groups like this who can share informaton about failures that the manufacturer wants to ignore or dismiss. This is how Volvo NA was finally forced into admitting that their ETMs failed in the S70 and V70. They dismissed it for years, the slimeballs, even though it was an obvious safety problem.

Re: 6-cyl double vanos problem assessment

    1997 (MFG 8/96) E39 528i.

I am a little confused as to whether or not the six inline (2.8l) engine from my 1997 528i has the double vanos or not. If it does, the problems it is experiencing are very likely the double vanos seals. Which engine do I have and is it possible that I have the same issue?
