    Kudos and thanks to Rajaie

Rajaie, you're a prince. Without such help it would be very difficult for middle-class BMW enthusiasts to enjoy their favorite vehicles. Many thanks. Congratulations on getting to the bottom of the Vanos situation and starting up your company. Good luck to you.
Now, if I can just get my soon-to-be-ex-wife to hand over the keys to my E39, I'll get to maintaining it again.

    Re: Seals solution

Does the VANOS problem mainly apply to 328i and 528i and no Automatics?
My 98 323iA (ECE) still runs without any "jolt". And we had very cold
winterdays here in Germany. In some german forums drivers installed successfully the BEISON seal kit. Mainly 528i, no automatics. The cause is stiil mystical for me. SW update did not help, other users
    noted vice versa.

    Re: Seals solution

    Hallo Holsteiner,

Replacing the vanos seals does not matter if you have an automatic (steptronic) or a stick shift. It applies to all BMW 3-series and 5-series cars that are 6 cylinders and also have a vanos, whether a single vanos and/or double vanos.

    Warranty won't fix vanos?

Let me understand: you have an aftermarket warranty from WarrantyDirect and now they refuse to pay for repair of an internal engine component? It's sad you've learned that most of these accessory warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on. Try complaining to your state's insurance commissioner. Often amazing things happen when the commissioner's office writes a balky insurer.

Re: 6-cyl double vanos problem assessment

I didn't know that there was a 6 cylinder "M" model. Yours is an interesting case, as the warranty company seems to be rather rightly claiming that BMW should be covering the repair under the factory warranty. I don't believe that they believe that it's their job to provide their warranty coverage, indirectly, to BMW of America. That would sort of be what they're doing if they paid for the repair without a fight. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sticking up for insurance companies, as they don't need my help, and they usually tick me off.
I see this sort of thing often in the area of buyer's home protection policies on houses. The companies are always looking for a way out of covering expensive repairs.
That said, I'd think that since your mechanic is saying the cams need to be replaced, this is an issue worth fighting for.
Question: Have their been notable changes made to the double Vanos since 1999? I ask because I didn't have to mess with my cams when I replaced my Vanos seals last month. I read that you must take special steps with the cams in the single Vanos but not the dual.

Re: 6-cyl double vanos problem assessment

    I have a 325i M54 engine.
I had a slight rattle between 3k RPM. Was planning to change the o rings as outlined in Beisan Systems 6-cylinder Double Vanos Procedure (E46, E39) but know a very long knocking from the vanos.
The engine management light is up , but i need to read the error code.

Can the bearings in the vanos and / or splined shafts (cups) attached to pistons fail ?

Has anybody else had such a problem ?

    Any help would be appreciated.
