SES only goes off by itself when. . .

I was told that the only time the SES will go off by itelf, i.e.,
without being reset after checking, is if the fault was caused by
a gas cap failure. Is this true of false?
Mine has been going on and off since I bought the car two months ago
and my mechanic has never been able to catch it failing. The car runs
    perfectly. Am I at risk?

    Thanks, Craig

    that is false

the ses light will go off after a certain number of "drive cycles" that do not have whatever fault set it off. Yes, could be a gas cap, but it could also be anything else. Get a peake code reader so you can check for yourself, worth the peace of mind to know what is causing it, imho. Not likely you'll damage anything, especially with the light going off.

Mike is right. You really need the service tech to read the codes. I had my SES light go on and off a couple of times in the past. One fault was a misfire in cylinder 5. The other times were from my post cat O2 sensors. I ended up having to replace both those sensors. The misfire event reset itself (SES light went out) after stopping and re-starting the car. The O2 sensor faults kept the SES light on until the service tech reset it
