Re: I would not compare the M5 and the Cayenne.

I am planning on purchasing a 997S in the near future. The problem is I made the mistake of taking a Caymen S for a day. The car is so much livelier than the 997 it is amazing. Does not get the same respect, but is the better drive... especially when you are pushing it.

I agree ! The SMG is manual with auto mode

not an automatic with manual mode. There is no smoothness in the auto mode. period.
If you want to drive it in auto mode then you made a wrong choice by buying it. Most people who bought the M5 will never like it as they should have never bought it in a 1st place. the car is designed for the fast lane, not to crawl in traffic. it can do it but its like asking a supermodel to cook and clean up. SHe will do it but you won't thank her for that.
I won't buy an M5 SMG because I think it is more for the track and highway and I need to do city driving.
get an AMG E class E55 or E63 and it will be your choice and calling. same performance and automatic.
if anybody who says the E63 will not match the M5 hasn't driven the E63 yet.

    Any high perfromance driving instruction?

Have you been to a High Performance driving school? I have been instructing at BMW schools (hoosier chapter) for about 10 years now and have yet to encounter a single novice student that knew how to drive "correctly". That is, in a way that is smooth, uses appropriate inputs on the controls, and drives the best line. The "correct" way not only allows for much greater speed but also provides the greatest margin of safety.

It is especially important to drive "correctly" in the M5, which has a very powerful race car drivetrain....very very responsive AND very very unforgiving of incorrect inputs. The reason the M3 SMG is easier to drive is because it has ALOT less power.

I expect you believe you know how to drive....after all you have probably been doing it for some time now. How do you know? Have you ever tested yourself? Have you ever done an autocross or driving school? The M5 is not like other cars...as undoubtedly you quite enjoy at times....Wrong inputs equals jerkyness

The M5 can be driven smoothly, if you/your wife are having difficulty with it then, at least consider getting some instruction at a high performance driving event. Not only will you enjoy the experience, you will also be much better/safer drivers.

good luck and I hope to see you at the track someday!

2004 545 SMG I'v learned to shift smooth you have

to imagine your driving a Manual Transmission. Put it in Sport Mode and BLIP the throttle Before going to your next Gear. I live in Florida ( No Hills to speak of) But But I also complained of Rough Shift Before comming apon this system. If you Weight the Good Vs Bad of A BMW M5 or 5Series SMG well you Know the Answer Already.
