help identifying vehicle

Hi I am looking at purchasing this car. It is being represented to me as an M car. To me it doesn't look right. The badging is off, the dials don't look M. Something just doesn't quite fit. It is a 1990 it has the M logo, and a 535i logo on the right hand side of trunk, on the left hand side is an AC Schnitzer logo. It has aftermarket, wheels and exhaust etc, so it is hard to tell from those things. Also, it is an Automatic...

It is a great looking car, and low mileage so I may buy it no matter what it is, it's more a question of price.

Any help would be great. If anyone is really interested in playing detective with me, I can email some pics.

There was no such thing as an automatic M5. Would anyone ever convert one to auto--doubtful. Have you opened up the hood???? That would be your best sign.
