"Everyone recommends against it"?? +
Who is "everyone"? Dozens of people on this and other X5 boards have been happily driving on 20-inch wheels for years, me included.
Pro: Great looks, more sensitive steering, great looks, better ultimate grip, great looks.
Con: Expensive wheels, expensive tires, steering can get twitchy, tramlining in longitudinal grooves, slightly firmer ride.
I run 20's with Michelin Diamaris tires in summer, 18's with Pirelli Scorpions in winter. Couldn't be happier!
Did I mention? -- they look great.

B man, listen to SCX5. He speaks the truth.
If you ride in any X5 that has larger than 20" wheels,...you will be quite disappointed,..(MHO) versus riding in any X5 that has 20" wheels installed. There is something about the size of the 20s that optimize the ride of the X5,...all models. Have you ever noticed how "bouncey" X5s on 22s and 24s are when on the roll? Now, if you like this bobble-head affect,...go with the 22s and 24s. If you want a better ride,...plus killa looks,...go with 20s.
Personally,...(MHO) there is no better looking wheel on an X5 than the 4.6is 20s. ...maybe 'cept when the same wheel style has a chrome finish.
...your decision.
