    What marvel of marketing department engineering gets the same 3.0 liter motor to 230 hp when its at 215 hp in the '325i' and 255 in the '330i' ?

    325i looks like a bargain any way you cut it, even though I like the way a coupe looks better than a four door.

    Now that I think about it

    Maybe that weight is for the AWD version. It's hard to believe a couple turbos could add that much weight, but 200lbs would be in the ballpark for AWD hardware.

    FWIW, I wouldn't get too excited about the weights just yet.

    -As I recall, there was some confusion over the EU-spec weights being 'translated' to US-spec for the E85 and E63, when they were new. Wouldn't be the first time BMW NA's weights look a little curious.

    -EU convention is to include 75kg (for passenger & luggage), in the quoted figure. I'd wait to see what the EU-spec weight is without that 75kg - the car itself.

    -An addt'l 180lbs does seem like alot. There is no weight listed for the 328xi...Hmm, could it possibly be that the 328xi's weight was mistakenly listed as the 335i's???

    I kind of saw this coming

    All the blurbs on the engine talked about how much lighter it was than a comparable V8 with the same horsepower. What they didn't say was how much heavier it is than the standard normally aspirated i6. I read elsewhere that the turbo engine is all aluminum, rather than the magnesium alloy used in the normally aspirated version. Add to this the weight of the turbos and associated hardware, and this makes sense. I'll reserve judgement on the handling penalty, but it can't help-especially in the balance front to rear. I wonder why they didn't try to offset some of the extra weight with an aluminum hood, like the M3. This car is 160 pounds heavier than the current M3 with 33 fewer horses and a little more torque. Comparisons should be interesting, but I'm sad to say this car is a bit bloated for my taste.

    E46 M3 is looking like a bargain

    My guess is that it will be priced rather close to the current E 46 M3 . . The new coupe is heavier and has less HP than the current M3 .I would have to drive both to make the clear decision but honestly --if I was looking for a 3 series coupe (rather than foor door) --I would probably opt for an M3 .

    You have a good point.............

    A one year old used M3 with low miles will definitely be cheaper than the 335i coupe. The only thing I can think of a reason to buy the 335i over the M3 would be that the 335i will probably be more civilized in terms of ride. The M3 has a very stiff suspension that can be tiring on long trips, although I've driven my '04 M3 400 miles in a day and didn't really feel that tired. Of course the M3 also has the option of a great SMG system with 11 different shift programs. Another plus for the M3 is the trick rear differential which varies the power to either wheel 100%....about the best limited slip diff on the market. The 335i with steptronic would be a nice city car where there is lots of traffic and people don't want to keep shifting gears.


    Lots of pros and cons. If I had to do it all over again....I'd still buy the M3...it is an amazing drive.

    Less torque though

    The M3 would probably be superior at the track, but I would bet that the 335i would be better for all-around driveability due to having more torque and a more compliant suspension.

    If the E46 M3's styling wasn't dated, your point

    But as it stands now the E46 M3 is yesterday's news IMO. The E46 M3 is still a nice car but it's the weakest car in it's class (C55, RS4) in horsepower and especially in torque. The Simple fact that the M3 is now being compared to a 3-series coupe suggests that the E46 M3’s best days are now behind it. That’s not the way I would want to start a relationship with a "New Car". Maybe I’m different?

    Dealers can place orders now

    Production starts in June, 2006 for some of the new coupes. Dealers will get their June production allocation on Apr 24 and they will be able to place an order for June production at that time.

    The dealers just won't know the price but dealerss don't need the price to order a car. And remember that you can order your new 3 Series coupe now by placing an order that indicates $x.xx below MSRP or $x.xx above dealer invoice.

    Gotta wait and see

    I like the more aggressive looks of the M3 over this coupe which (to me) is a necessary component in sacrificing those two extra doors . As for the torque -- there is also a difference in weight too and let's keep in mind that the new M3 version is around the corner . Once taht car is launched then many who opted for the 335 might want the new M car instead and by the time a little bargain pricing is available the lease on the current M3 would be finishing up. Also -- with the E 90 styling novelty factor of "its hot and trendy at the moment" --the current M3 has some discount wiggle room and the 335 might not .
    Either way --it's a wait and see scenario --but if I really wanted a coupe --which I don't -- I would lease an M3 and wait a bit . In my opinion pricing will be so important for this 335 as well as M car .
